Hagerstown Suns News Release

Hagerstown, MD: The Hagerstown Suns (30-40, 58-82) ended their 2006 season on Labor Day by completing a four game sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 4-1 win. The Suns finished 7-1 in their final eight-game homestand of 2006. They beat the Lake County Captains in three of four and then swept the Shorebirds four games to none. The Suns swept their first home series of the season three games to none over the Lakewood Blueclaws back in April. The Blueclaws, however, won the second half in the Northern Division to join the Lexington Legends (the only other team the Suns swept in a four game series this year) in the playoffs starting on Wednesday, September 6th. In the Southern Division the Rome Braves will face the Augusta GreenJackets in the post season. The Suns went 28-42 in the first half and 30-40 in the second half to finish a combined 58-82. That record happens to be the second worst in Hagerstown Suns history, the worst being the 49-88 team from 2004 when the SF Giants were the affiliate in Hagerstown. Jim Wladyka (1-1) earned his first win of the year and Steve Cheney notched his first save in the Suns 4-1 win on Monday. Sean Henry was a one man wrecking crew against the Shorebirds (27-42, 64-73) with (2) two-run homers which accounted for all the Suns runs. The Suns lost their bid for their ninth shutout of the year when Ryan Finan knocked in his team-leading 77th RBI with a sac-fly in the eighth. Matt Durkin threw in his only game of the year for the Suns but didn't factor in the decision. Jeff Landing and Waner Mateo also got in some work in the finale.

Municipal Stadium will still be hosting two post-season events in September. The first will be on the 14th from 6-11pm with the Suns first ever Tailgate Thursday for the Maryland Terrapins vs. West Virginia Mountaineer college football game. The other fun event will be the 3rd Annual Chili Cookoff & Music Festival on Saturday, September 23rd, from noon to 5pm. For more information on these or any events with the Hagerstown Suns just call the Suns office at 301.791.6266 or visit the Suns on the web at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
