Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - While the Gary South Shore RailCats reach the halfway point of their current six game road trip, the club has announced that OF Jon Jones has been activated off of the Disabled List. The RailCats also placed C Michael Vaughn on the Disabled List to make room for Jones retroactive to August 11th.
Jon Jones had been the spark plug of the recent RailCats offensive surge, when a hamstring injury sidelined him on the last South Shore road trip. The Vacaville, California native has a team leading .301 batting average in 64 games in a RailCats uniform with three home runs and 33 RBI. Jones also has six triples good for third in the American Association. He also leads the RailCats with 16 stolen bases.
The South Shore acquired the California product after lengthy stint in the Toronto Blue Jays system. The outfielder was drafted in the 29th round of the 2010 draft by Toronto out of Long Beach State. Jones progressively made his way up the Blue Jays system before sticking at AA New Hampshire in 2014 before his release in October 2014. In nearly 1200 minor league at-bats, Jones has 304 hits, 54 doubles and 110 RBI.
The RailCats had Michael Vaughn on the day to day list after the catcher was injured running in pregame warmups Tuesday night at Fargo. Vaughn had his right ankle fall into a deep sprinkler hole at Newman Outdoor Stadium and was scratched from the August 11th lineup.
Vaughn is hitting .211 for Gary this season in 50 games with two homeruns and 19 RBI. The RailCats singed Michael Vaughn as a free agent on 3/9/15 after he spent 2014 in the Frontier League with the Frontier Greys. Vaughn was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB June Draft out of Fresno Pacific University (CA).
The RailCats will continue their six game road trip tonight at 7:05pm when they open up a three game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com with the pregame at 6:40pm. Following three games in Sioux Falls the Cats will head home to face the Joplin Blasters in the visitors first ever trip to US Steel Yard for a three game series. That series will also include the completion of a suspended game from August 5th that began in Joplin and will be completed August 18th at 5:00pm prior to the regular series opener at 7:10pm.
