Johnson's Long Ball Lifts Revs To Second Straight Win
June 22, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
Cody Johnson hammered a three-run opposite field home run to break a tie in the sixth inning, helping the York Revolution to a 5-3 win over the Somerset Patriots in front of a season-high 6,039 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Saturday evening. With the 250th win in Sovereign Bank Stadium history, the Revs have clinched a series win, and will go for the sweep on Sunday.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Somerset manager Brett Jodie called on lefty Ben Kozlowski to face Johnson with two on and two out. After pinch hitting for Johnson in that matchup the night before, Revs manager Mark Mason stayed with Johnson, who connected on a two-ball, two-strike pitch for his fifth home run of the season, giving the Revs a 5-2 lead.
York struck first as Wilson Batista tagged a solo home run to right in the bottom of the first inning, his first of the year, providing the Revs with a quick 1-0 lead.
Eddy Martinez-Esteve answered with a solo homer to left in the top of the second, also his third of the season, as the team's traded solo shots for a 1-1 tie.
Somerset went in front in the top of the third on a two-out double to left by Jake Fox who picked up his league-leading 56th RBI. It plated Jonny Tucker who walked earlier in the inning and stole second, called safe on a close play.
Revs starter Corey Thurman found himself in a bases loaded jam with one out in the fifth after intentionally walking Fox. Reliever Stephen Penney came in and needed one pitch to retire cleanup hitter Corey Smith on a 4-6-3 double play to keep it a one-run game. Penney has now stranded 10 of his last 11 inherited runners.
The Revs also loaded the bases with one out in their half of the fifth, and did take advantage thanks to a sac fly to right by Wilson Batista, tying the game at 2-2.
Penney (2-2) earned the win, staying in to work a scoreless sixth inning, rolling another double play to end that inning, a 6-4-3 twin-killing off the bat of Jeff Baisley.
Cory Aldridge slammed a solo homer to right-center with two outs in the eighth, ending reliever Michael Wuertz' scoreless streak after 16 appearances and 17.0 innings. The streak is the sixth longest in club history and second longest by a reliever.
Wuertz still earned a hold, as did lefty Edward Paredes who worked a scoreless seventh, as closer Juan Rincon slammed the door with a 1-2-3 save for the second straight night, notching his 12th save of the year.
Somerset starter Brad Thompson (4-3) took the loss, charged with four runs in 5.2 innings.
