Johnson Leads Dragons to 3-0 Win

Eastlake, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Johnson and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 3-0 on Friday night. The Dragons avoided a sweep of the four-game series and finished their seven-game road trip at 2-5.

Johnson (6-6) was outstanding for the fourth straight time to the mound as he earned the victory. He worked six innings, allowing three hits and no runs with one walk and six strikeouts. Johnson has allowed just three earned runs over his last four starts covering 25.1 innings, an ERA of 1.07.

Dragons reliever Doug Salinas enjoyed his second straight dominant performance. Salinas worked two and one-third innings, striking out six while allowing just one hit and no walks. He earned his fourth save. Over his last two games, Salinas has struck out 11 of the 14 batters he has faced.

The Dragons took the lead in the top of the second inning. Josh Garton walked to start the inning and raced around to third on a double to right by Tommy Nurre. With two outs, Frank Pfister lined a single to left to bring in both Garton and Nurre and make it 2-0.

Dayton scored again in the seventh inning when Nurre was hit by a pitch and eventually scored from second on a two-out single to center by Andrew Means to give Dayton a 3-0 lead and close out the scoring.

The Dragons finished with four hits. Nurre, Pfister, Means, and Ryan LaMarre notched the hit column.

The Dragons (10-29) return home to Dayton to host the West Michigan Whitecaps (16-24) in the first game of a four-game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Clayton Shunick (1-0, 1.50) will make his first home start for Dayton. Luis Angel Sanz (1-5, 6.31) will start for West Michigan. Detroit Tigers outfielder Carlos Guillen is expected to play in the game with West Michigan on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

The game will be televised from Fifth Third Field on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on Time Warner basic cable). Former Reds pitcher Doug Bair will provide color commentary.
