Johnny Pesky to Throw Out First Pitch

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs are set to begin their tenth season of operation and first as the Class AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Sea Dogs open the 2003 season at Hadlock Field on Thursday, April 3rd at 6:00pm versus the Class AA affiliate of the New York Yankees, the Trenton Thunder. Opening Day ceremonies are finalized and is highlighted by former Red Sox Johnny Pesky throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

Pesky began his career with the Red Sox as a minor league player in 1940. He has served as a player, coach, radio-TV announcer, and advertising salesman. Currently he is a special assignment instructor for the Red Sox, primarily helping infielders at Pawtucket and Lowell. Pesky hit .310 over his Major League career with Boston, Detroit, and Washington. He held the Red Sox record for hits by a rookie (205, broken by Nomar Garciaparra in 1997). He is tied for the Major League record for leading the league in hits three straight years and having scored six runs in one game (May 8, 1946). He was inducted to the Red Sox Hall of Fame on November 1, 1995.

Presenting the colors for the game will be the Maine Maritime Color Guard. The Boys Singers of Maine will be performing both God Bless America and the National Anthem. As usual, team mascot Slugger, has a special grand entrance planned.

The first 5,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive Thundersticks courtesy of Hannford Supermarket's. The Bellamy Jazz Band will greet fans as they enter the ballpark, gates will open at 4:00pm. Pre-game ceremonies will begin at 6:00pm with the first pitch scheduled for 6:20pm.
