Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD): Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Butch Hobson has announced the official signing of 16-year veteran pitcher John Halama. This will be Halama's third season with the Blue Crabs after he began 2008 and 2009 in Southern Maryland before being picked up by Major League organizations. The 6'5 left-hander has big league experience in nine seasons.
In 2008, Halama went 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA in eight starts, before signing with the Cleveland Indians on June 3. At Triple-A Buffalo he carried an 8-6 record with two complete games in 16 starts.
Last season he had another stellar stint with the Blue Crabs, going 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA and four complete games in 10 starts. He held opponents to a .250 average, and had a three-to-one strikeout to walk ratio (39 K's and only 13 walks). Halama helped the Blue Crabs achieve the second lowest team ERA in the league (4.10). He parlayed those remarkable numbers into a contract with the Atlanta Braves on June 13. At Triple-A Gwinnett he tossed 90.1 innings in 16 games and 13 starts.
Halama broke into the majors with the Houston Astros in 1998 before being traded to the Seattle Mariners prior to the 1999 season, as the player to be named later in the deal that sent pitcher Randy Johnson from Seattle to Houston. Halama would also pitch for the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles through 2006. Drafted in 1994 by Houston, Halama is 56-48 overall in the Major Leagues with a 4.65 ERA in 262 games and 119 starts. The Brooklyn, New York native turned 38 in February.
