Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Bernardino, CA-- For a second straight game, the Quakes were unable to hold a sizable lead, as the Inland Empire 66ers rallied for a 6-5 win over the Quakes on Thursday night at San Manuel Stadium.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Houchins brought home David Fletcher with the winning run in the last of the ninth, as the Sixers salvaged a split of the four-game set, sending the Quakes to their second straight loss.
Quakes' reliever Wes Helsabeck (1-1) came on with one out in the eighth and opened the ninth with the game tied at 5-5. Fletcher started the inning with a single, but with one out, look liked he was picked off by the lefty. With Fletcher moving on a pitch to Wade Wass, Helsabeck threw over to first base, but first baseman Edwin Rios fired wildly to second base, allowing Fletcher to take third base. After back-to-back intentional walks loaded the bases, Houchins delivered a fly ball to right field, bringing home the game-winner.
The Quakes got a huge night from Joey Curletta in the losing effort, as he drove in a season-high four runs, finishing 2-for-4.
Curletta homered in the second, then struck for a two-out three-run double in the sixth, helping the Quakes to take three of four against the 66ers and give Rancho their seventh win in their last eight games.
The Quakes took an early 1-0 lead in the first, as Tim Locastro singled and later scored on a Matt Beaty two-out double.
Curletta's eighth home run of the year made it 2-0 in the second, against Inland Empire starter Jeremy Rhoades.
Quakes' starter Grant Holmes was touched for an unearned run in the fourth, as the 66ers got on the board to make it 2-1, but left two men stranded.
After the Quakes loaded the bases without the aid of a hit with two outs in the sixth, Rhoades was pulled, in favor of reliever Adam Hofacket. Hofacket's first batter was Curletta, who blasted a pitch to the left-center field gap, scoring three to make it 5-1.
Inland Empire got three back and chased Holmes with one out in the sixth, as they closed to within a run at 5-4.
Adam Bray came on to get the final two outs of the sixth, but gave up the game-tying run in the seventh, as Hutton Moyer doubled home David Fletcher to make it 5-5.
Inland Empire reliever Kevin Grendell (1-3) struck out the side in the ninth to earn the win.
Rancho (9-6, 51-34) will head to High Desert on Friday, opening a four-game series at 7:05pm versus the Mavs. Josh Sborz (7-3) will take on Mavs' right-hander David Ledbetter (3-6) in the opener.
After the Quakes' eight-game road trip, Rancho returns to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, July 13th for a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark. tickets are still available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
