San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants were unable to complete a sweep of Modesto as the Nuts earned a 6-0 shutout on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. Modesto's Jack Wynkoop fired seven scoreless innings as the Nuts snapped a seven-game losing streak. Despite the loss, San Jose (46-38) still won three out of four games in the series.
Rene Melendez (2-for-3) singled twice and was the only Giants player to finish the contest with more than one hit. Ronnie Jebavy (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to nine games in defeat.
The Nuts jumped out early scoring once in the top of the second against San Jose starter Jason Forjet to take a 1-0 lead. After Forjet retired the first five Nuts hitters, back-to-back two-out doubles from Drew Weeks and Josh Fuentes in the second produced a run for Modesto.
The Nuts then scored twice in the top of the third to extend their lead to 3-0. Consecutive one-out singles from Omar Carrizales and Forrest Wall put runners on first and second. Wes Rogers then stepped to the plate and doubled to deep left plating both for a 3-0 Modesto cushion.
The Nuts scored their final run against Forjet in the top of the fifth as Carrizales led off with a triple down the right field line and scored a batter later when Wall hit a sacrifice fly.
Forjet (8-6) suffered the loss despite matching a season-high with seven innings pitched. The right-hander was charged with four runs (all earned) on seven hits. He struck out five and walked none. Forjet finished his outing by retiring nine consecutive Modesto hitters.
Meanwhile, the Giants put a runner into scoring position in four straight innings from the second through the fifth, but were unable to breakthrough against Wynkoop. In the bottom of the second, Daniel Carbonell doubled with two outs, but was stranded when T.J. Bennett grounded out. An inning later, Melendez and Jebavy delivered back-to-back one-out singles putting runners on first and second, but Robbie Garvey flied out and Dylan Davis grounded out.
Trailing by three runs, San Jose threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Jose Vizcaino, Jr. doubled with one out. Carbonell then struck out on a pitch in the dirt. On the play, Vizcaino attempted to advance to third, but was thrown out by the catcher Dom Nunez. Carbonell did reach first, but was later picked-off by Wynkoop to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bennett led off with a single before Melendez's one-out single put runners on the corners. Melendez though was picked off as well by Wynkoop before Jebavy struck out to finish the inning.
The Giants then managed just one hit over the final four innings - a single from Davis with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
The Nuts added to their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth against D.J. Snelten (2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO). A leadoff single followed by an error put two runners on with none out. Nunez then delivered a one-out RBI single before a Fuentes sacrifice fly made the score 6-0.
Wynkoop (1-1) earned his first California League win after scattering seven hits during his seven-inning performance. He struck out five and walked none. Tyler Matzek and Luis Niebla each threw a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.
Notes: * San Jose was attempting to sweep their first series since taking three straight in Stockton from May 17-19. * The Nuts out-hit the Giants 9-7. * Modesto had scored just two runs over the first three games of the series. * Jonah Arenado (0-for-4) saw his hitting streak snapped at eight games. * Forjet fell to 0-4 in four starts against the Nuts this season (8-2 versus the rest of the league). * San Jose still owns an 11-9 edge over Modesto in the season series.
