Six Run 7th Powers Blaze To Win

July 8, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Bakersfield Blaze loaded the bases in four separate innings, scoring just one run in the first three tries; a monster 7th turned the tide of the contest, and the Blaze ripped past the High Desert Mavericks 8-4 in front of a packed house on B-Dodgers throwback night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

For six innings, the game was an exercise in frustration. Art Warren worked an easy 1st in a one-inning tune-up start, and Eddie Campbell (W, 10-5) came on for quiet 2nd and 3rd innings before the game got a bit interesting.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Blaze took a short-lived lead on a balk by Mavs started Adam Quintana, who ended up going 5.1 frames and struck out a season-high 11 batters.

High Desert responded with a three-spot in the 4th off Campbell, and Tyler Marlette continued his recent surge with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Mavs added an unearned run to build the lead back to two, and that is where it would remain until the 7th. But not for lack of effort.

The Blaze loaded the bases in the 5th and 6th innings, but came up empty. In the 7th, though, the Blaze pushed ahead with a truly massive frame, marked by four hits, two walks and a pair of Mavericks' errors. Marlette had a key RBI single, and Braden Bishop's two-run hit put the finishing touches on a six-run inning that turned a two run hole into a four run insurmountable lead.

The loss falls on the shoulders of Cody Palmquist (L, 2-1), who, like Shane McCain before him, struggled in relief for High Desert.

Aaron Brooks worked the final two innings to wrap up the win.

The Blaze improve to 12-3 since the All Star Break, winning three of four games on a homestand for the second time in as many tries, and now lead the North by 5.0 games.

The team embarks on a four game road trip to Visalia starting with a 7:00pm Friday night start. Dave Gascon has the call for all four contests at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio.
