Joes miss chance at consecutive wins

June 5, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

Looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, the Anderson Joes took a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning against Bradenton on Tuesday night. The Juice scored three times in their last at-bats, though, taking the lead for good at 6-4.

Joes closer Jason Williams entered in the eighth inning without incident, retiring the last two batters of the frame. However, after getting Bradenton's pinch hitter Jean Castro to ground out to start the ninth, things fell apart for the new Joes stopper. Julius Thames and Luke Barganier singled and were both driven in by Al Corbeil's RBI double, with all three hits coming in succession. Eddie Kim would later drive Corbeil in on a sacrifice fly for the third run on the inning.

Wayne Hedden earned the win for Bradenton (8-7), improving to 2-1 on the year. Steve Alverson notched his league-leading third save of the season and Williams dropped to 0-2 after the blown save for the Anderson (3-13).

The Juice snapped out of their three-game losing streak, while the Joes lost for the third time this year in ballgames following a victory. The two teams finish the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night.

Heath Keel put together a perfect offensive night for Anderson, going 4-for-4 with two runs scores, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. But, as has been the case on a few occasions for the Joes this summer, the team had a hard time closing the door on the opponent, something the Joes hope to work out sooner rather than later.

"We're still trying to find the right mix of guys, get our rotation set up to the point where we have the right guys to come in and close a ballgame," Keel said. "It's still early and I think we're going to do OK and do well. ...As long as we improve every game and every day, I think we'll be just fine."
