Redfish Flat As Music Even Series

June 5, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- It was a tale of two nights in the first two games between the Charlotte County Redfish and the Macon Music. The Redfish took game one with great pitching and great defense and the Music gave the Redfish a taste of their own medicine as great starting pitching and Redfish defensive miscues evened the series as the Redfish fell 7-1.

The Music sent Vern Sterry (1-1) to the hill to face the same Redfish lineup that knocked around Music pitching for seven runs on eleven hits the night before. Sterry, though, never let the Redfish build any momentum. Sterry pitched eight innings with four hits, six strikeouts and only allowed one Redfish run to cross the plate. The run came off the bat of William Plaza, Redfish catcher, who crushed a two-out solo home run over the leftfield wall.

When they looked at the scoreboard, Charlotte County must have felt like they were caught in twilight zone. The previous night, the Redfish had committed no errors and they were the ones with seven runs across on eleven hits. Macon touched up Redfish starter Alex Fernandez (0-2) early and two Redfish errors in the first two innings didn't help. The Redfish would have four errors on the evening at Luther Williams Field. Macon brought home two runs each in the second and third innings and Fernandez's night ended early. He threw two and one-third innings with four earned runs, seven hits and two walks.

Macon continued to hit the Redfish hard as Lazaro Piniero shared the same fate as Fernandez. Piniero, who was able to get the first two batters out in each of his two and one-third innings, couldn't close the deal after that. Macon would plate three off Piniero and Redfish Manager, Jackie Hernandez, was forced to go to the bullpen once again. The Redfish would go the bullpen three times on the night. The three relievers used combined for five and two-third innings, three runs, two earned, five hits, and five walks. Yanier Manso had three strikeouts, giving him twelve on the season.

The Redfish will look to take their first series of the season as they take on the Music tomorrow night, June 5th, in the rubber game of the series. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. The Redfish return to Charlotte Sports Park on Thursday, June 7th, to take on the Anderson Joes for three games and begin a six game homestand.
