Joe Paterson Named Toronto Roadrunners Assistant Coach

The Edmonton Oilers announced today the appointment of Joe Paterson as the new Assistant Coach for the Toronto Roadrunners of the American Hockey League.

The 43 year old Paterson played 12 seasons (291 NHL/392 AHL games) with the Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings organizations and brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Roadrunners. He competed in the 1985 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Philadelphia Flyers.

He will be joining Geoff Ward, Head Coach of the Roadrunners and a coaching team that took the Hamilton Bulldogs to a seventh game of the 2003 Calder Cup final series. The Bulldogs had the best record in the AHL last season.

Scott Howson, General Manager of the Roadrunners and Assistant General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers said "we are pleased to have Joe back with us for another year. He has strong leadership capabilities and the ability to teach and develop players".

Prior to Hamilton, Paterson helped develop players for the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes while in a duel affiliation with New Haven as an Assistant Coach from 1997-1999. He was Head Coach of the AHL Louisville Panthers from 1999-2001 and he was Head Coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 1995-1997 in the Ontario Hockey League. Paterson was also Assistant Coach of the Detroit Red Wings top affiliate, the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL from 1992-1995 and helped develop such players as Kris Draper, Martin Lapointe, Slava Kozlov, Chris Osgood, Darren McCarty, Jamie Pushor, Aaron Ward and Tim Taylor who went on to Detroit and played on the 1997 and 1998 Stanley Cup teams. He also developed top draft picks Joe Thornton (1st overall) and Rico Fata (6th overall) while coaching in Sault Ste Marie

Ernie Coetzee, President of the Toronto Roadrunners added that he was pleased that the Oilers have brought the dynamic coaching duo from the Hamilton Bulldogs to Toronto.
