Kansas City Brigade News Release

KANSAS CITY - Public service comes in many forms, but only a select few has the dedication to make a lifelong commitment to the community. Master Deputy Bob Shires of the Johnson County, Kan., Sheriff's Office is one of them. He was recognized with a special honor today by Brigade co-owner Neil Smith and the Brigade Girls.

Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning nominated Master Deputy Shires to receive special passes for him and his family to the first Brigade Public Safety Appreciation Day on Saturday, May 12 when the team takes on the Utah Blaze at 7 p.m. at Kemper Arena. They will be treated to VIP parking, seats in the owner's suite with complimentary food and drink, and the company of Smith and Brigade ownership.

"Integrity is all you have", Dep. Shires said. "With that comes honor and respect. Thank you to the Kansas City Brigade for the recognition."

Over 40 police and fire departments from the Kansas City metro area will also be in attendance. Each department has received complimentary tickets for their officers to distribute. Current and retired personnel and their families can also receive a $4 discount on any ticket to the game.

Dep. Shires has been an employee of the JOCO Sheriff's Office for over 11 years, serving three years in the Detention Division, two years in the Patrol Division and more than six years in his current assignment in the Training Division. One example of his professionalism and true desire to make a difference are his efforts in emergency vehicle operations. Aware of the high number of officer injuries and deaths nationwide attributed to vehicle operation, Dep. Shires was instrumental in implementing a non-emergency and emergency driving curriculum into the Sheriff's Office training. In May 2005, Dep. Shires completed a two-week Federal Law Enforcement Drivers Training Program to prepare for employing the course into the core instruction.

"Shires understands the importance that this training may have in keeping officers safe and reducing civil liability for the Sheriff's Office related to vehicle operations," Sheriff Denning said. "His ability to develop meaningful training programs is an asset to the Sheriff's Office and to each individual officer."
