Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The streak stays alive.
Thanks to two goals from Gaetan Jobin and a late third period goal from Lukas Cormier, the Charlottetown Islanders remain the only team undefeated in regulation time with a 3-1 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Sunday afternoon.
"Today's win was an important bounce back effort after Friday's disappointment," said Islanders head coach Jim Hulton following the victory. "We played an efficient and effective road game to capture 5 of 6 points this week."
The Islanders would strike first just over five minutes in to the first period. Kevin Gursoy would thread the needle cross-ice to a streaking Jobin and the Swiss forward make no mistake, deflecting it short side on Felix-Anthony Ethier to open the scoring with his third goal of the season.
The Titan would strike back later in the period on the powerplay thanks to Nicolas Kingsbury-Fournier. The big 17-year old would record his first goal of the season with just under three minutes to go in the first, knotting the game up at 1-1 heading in to the first intermission.
The second period largely belonged to the Islanders, although there were no goals to show for it. Titan starter Felix-Anthony Ethier stood on his head throughout the second, making a number of crucial saves to keep the game tied up. The Isles dominated the shot category through two periods, 26-16, including 17 shots in the second alone.
The third period finally brought the Islanders good fortune, and it was once again Jobin. The 18-year old would dangle around a Titan defender and firing a wrister high past a screened Ethier for his second goal of the game, fourth goal of the season, and the eventual game-winning goal.
Lukas Cormier would add icing on the cake in the final five minutes of the third, finishing off a beautiful individual effort down low by banking a shot off of Ethier and in. For Cormier, that would be his second goal on the season and second in as many games.
Nikita Alexandrov finished the game with two assists, his second multi-point game on the season. Kevin Gursoy and Noah Laaouan added single assists.
Matthew Welsh made 24 saves for his 103rd career victory. The win moved him in to a tie with Jean-Francois Labbe for 10th all-time in wins.
Hulton added that the team had lots to improve on this week.
"The group will look to improve in all facets of our game heading in to another busy weekend."
A busy weekend of hockey is exactly what the Islanders have ahead of them, and they're all at home! The Islanders play three times starting Friday night when the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies come to town. This will be the first time that Charlottetown native and Huskies defender Jacob Squires will play in front of his hometown crowd.
