JetHawks Blow Out Quakes 10-1
August 17, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA-Anthony Cupps baffled the Quakes for eight innings in just his second California League start and Lancaster never trailed in a 10-1 win before 2,547 fans at the Epicenter Wednesday night. The JetHawks improved to 27-24 in the second half and 59-62 overall, while the Quakes slipped to 22-30 and 54-68, and 5.5 games out of first place.
The JetHawks opened the scoring in the first when Quakes starter Steve Marek walked the first two hitters of the game and Cesar Nicolas got Lancaster on the board with an RBI groundout. Brandon Burgess made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the third, and a solo home run by Josh Ford and a sacrifice fly by Emilio Bonifacio in the fourth gave Lancaster a 4-0 lead.
Pat Reilly provided all the offense for the Quakes in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right, and Rancho Cucamonga then just barely missed tying the game in the sixth. With two on and two out Cupps hung a curveball to Ben Johnson that Johnson got underneath ever so slightly, and his deep drive to right died in Jon Zeringue's glove a step in front of the wall. Lancaster then put the game out of reach with six runs in the final three innings, including three more sac flies.
Cupps (2-0) worked eight near-flawless innings, allowing a run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He has now allowed one run and seven hits in 14 innings in his first two California League starts. Marek (1-3) suffered his third straight defeat, allowing four runs and five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out five. Reilly's home run was his 11th of the year and Nate Sutton finished with two hits.
The Quakes will try to avoid a sweep in this three-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370, and 12-ounce drinks will be just one dollar all night long as part of the regular Thirsty Thursday promotion. Francisco Rodriguez (4-11, 5.77 ERA) will start for the Quakes and Cody Evans (2-2, 7.82 ERA) will start for Lancaster. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
Notes: The Quakes announced before the game that shortstop Sean Rodriguez and catcher Tim Duff have been promoted to Class AA Arkansas, and pitcher Nick Adenhart has been placed on the inactive list so he can take part in U.S. Olympic team qualifying in Cuba. Rodriguez was batting .301 with a league-high 24 home runs and 77 RBI, while Duff was hitting .267 with one homer and 10 RBI. Adenhart was 5-2 with a 3.78 ERA in nine starts. Taking the open spots on the roster are shortstop Hainley Statia (.297, one homer, 38 RBI in Cedar Rapids) and pitcher Robert Mosebach (10-6, 3.04 ERA in 24 starts for Cedar Rapids).
