Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots (30-23) shut out the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-32) 7-0 before a season-high 8,071 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
Somerset starting pitcher Jeremy Horst (5-2) scattered just four hits in eight scoreless innings and struck out a team season-high ten batters for the win. He and Darin Gorski were tied for the previous season-high of eight strikeouts going into the game. At one point, Horst struck out five straight batters from the last batter of the first inning through the first batter of the third inning.
"I had a good three pitch mix and that's kind of my game plan all along. Just getting strikes, getting ahead and working quick. Tonight it all went pretty well," said Horst.
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double by Mycal Jones.
Rob Kral singled home a run in the next inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
Somerset made it a 4-0 advantage on a solo home run by Trayvon Robinson (7) in the sixth inning.
A two-run blast by Carlos Guzman (5) to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Patriots a 6-0 lead. Jones drove in another run later in the frame for the 7-0 final.
"I'm just trying not to do too much and play my part. Everybody is trying to do their part, and to be honest, it all starts with our catalyst Mycal Jones. A lot of times when he goes, we go," said Guzman.
Guzman was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the game. Jones added three RBI in his 2-for-5 performance.
Tim Sexton (1-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in five innings pitched.
"It was awesome. We had a couple of great plays that saved some hits to take away some runs. I definitely handled my side pretty good. The defense was outstanding and the hitting was definitely there," Horst added.
