Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (22-31) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-32) 5-1 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night to take the rubber game of the midweek series in a rain-shortened contest that was ended by the umpiring crew with one out and one man on in the top half of the seventh inning. Bridgeport has now won eight of their last eleven games and have taken a season-high three consecutive series overall.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan (2-1) earned the win after giving up just one run on three hits in five innings of work while walking one, striking out three and surrendering a home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Gaby Hernandez (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings, walking and striking out one, while hitting a batter and throwing two wild pitches.
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead off Hernandez in the top half of the fourth inning on a run-scoring single off the bat of Luis Rodriguez, plating Jose Cuevas with the game's first run after he belted his team-leading 14th double with one out. Southern Maryland would answer right back in the bottom of the frame against Beavan when former Bluefish Bryant Nelson launched a leadoff game-tying solo home run to right field, his first roundtripper of the season. Nelson finished the series with six hits in eleven at-bats against his old club.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the sixth, when Bridgeport took the lead for good and never looked back, sending eight batters to the plate while scoring four runs on five hits for a 5-1 advantage. Endy Chavez began the rally with a single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Hernandez, moving the lead run into scoring position. After a productive ground ball out by Welington Dotel moved the runner to third, Cuevas singled to left plating Chavez and the 'Fish were back on top. Cuevas collected his 31st run batted in, tops on the Bridgeport roster. Two batters later Jonathan Galvez scorched a run-scoring double that brought home Cuevas to make it 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Josh Vitters followed right behind Galvez with an RBI single, and Rossmel Perez sent Hernandez to the showers with a run-scoring base knock of his own as the Bluefish enjoyed their largest lead of the night at 5-1. With the rain coming down at a steady pace, the Bluefish needed to retire the Blue Crabs in the bottom half of the sixth to guaranteed themselves a potential victory with an official game, and Paul Demny did just with a clean inning of relief on a pair of ground ball outs and a strikeout to preserve the victory for Beavan, his second of the season with both coming against Southern Maryland. Chavez, Cuevas, and Rodriguez led the way for Bridgeport with two hits each. Photo provided courtesy of Memories Photography by Bert Hindman.
Bridgeport continues their six-game, two-state road trip on Friday night at PeoplesBank Park when they take on the York Revolution in the first of a three-game weekend series beginning at 6:30 P.M. The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday, June 20th when they welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers to kick off a seven-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M. It will be Latin Heritage Night, and the first collector pin giveaway of the season will take place.
