Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The Florida Marlins/Florida State League Scholarship Committee awarded 12 scholarships on Friday, August 7, one to each of the teams in the Florida State League, and Dunedin's recipient was someone fans know quite well.
Casey Peterson, who returned for his second year as the mascot of the Dunedin Blue Jays and will be a senior this year at the University of Florida, was this year's winner of the $1,500 scholarship, and Peterson's accomplishments as a Gator was recognized when he donned the suit of a Blue Jay.
During Saturday's contest with the Daytona Cubs, Blue Jays general manager and director of Florida operations Shelby Nelson presented D-Jay with a check to represent his scholarship winnings, and posed for the crowd as he accepted his award.
The scholarship has been sponsored by the Marlins for the last 10 years in partnership with the FSL, and Marlins Community Fund Executive Director Nancy Olsen has overseen its continuation over that time.
Eligible students must be employees of a Florida State League team or a child or grandchild of an employee of the team during the 2009 season, and must be at least a college junior by the fall term of 2009.
By being selected as the Blue Jays scholarship winner, Peterson will be a guest of the Marlins on Saturday, August 30 when they take on the San Diego Padres at Land Shark Stadium at 1:10 p.m. He and the other winners will be honored in front of the Marlins faithful with a ceremony during the contest.
