Jay Bouwmeester Retires

Medicine Hat, AB - Medicine Hat Tiger Alumni Jay Bouwmeester retires after an incredible 18 year NHL Career.

Bouwmeester's Tiger career began as a 16-year-old during the 1998-1999 season, appearing in 8 games. He recorded his first career WHL goal in his first career game against the Red Deer Rebels on November 6th, 1998. Bouwmeester would appear in 194 games for the Orange & Black, tallying 40 goals and adding 111 assists.

Jay was selected in the 1st Round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, 3rd overall to the Florida Panthers. The following season, Bouwmeester made the jump to the NHL appearing in all 82 games for the Panthers and recording 16 points.

In 2005 Bouwmeester would begin the longest iron man streak in the NHL as he did not miss a game for seven consecutive seasons as a member of the Panthers and later on the Calgary Flames blue line. He would play in 743 consecutive games, including playoffs.

Internationally Jay appeared in three World Junior Hockey Championships representing both the Tigers and Team Canada. He would be one of the youngest ever to play for Team Canada at the tournament at the age of 16 years and 3 months. Bouwmeester would win 2 bronze medals and a silver medal for the Canadian Junior Team.

Bouwmeester would also represent Canada in the 2003, 2004, 2008, 2012 Ice Hockey World Championships winning 2 gold medals and a silver, as well as capturing gold in 2004 and 2016 at the World Cup of Hockey.

In 2014 Jay played in all six of Canada's games at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He would register 2 points, log a lot of ice time and ultimately help Canada defeat Sweden and win the Gold Medal.

In 2019 Jay Bouwmeester would get to fulfill his hockey dream of capturing the Stanley Cup as a long time member of the St. Louis Blues. Jay's contributions were pivotal to the clubs success as he played an average of 23:30 a game during the playoffs. In game 7 he played more minutes than any other player on the ice (28:34) and fired the puck on net that Ryan O'Reilly deflected for the opening goal of the game.

Bouwmeester finishes his NHL career as only the 8th Tiger player in history to play in more than 1000 career NHL games. His final game would come on February 11, 2020. Bouwmeester appeared in 1240 regular season games, scoring 88 goals and 336 assists for 424 points.
