Jarvis Strikes out 10 in Extra-Innings Loss

Amarillo, TEXAS - Starting pitcher Bryce Jarvis racked up 10 strikeouts as the Amarillo Sod Poodles (45-47) fell to the Corpus Christi Hooks (41-51) in a 10-inning contest on Wednesday night, 7-2. Corpus Christi plated five runs in the top of the 10th to take game two.

Jarvis kicked off the game with four strikeouts in a row, and the Sod Poodles gave him the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd inning off the bat of Juan Centeno. Jorge Barrosa led off the frame with a walk, and Centeno made it 2-0 with his 10th long bomb of the season.

Jarvis continued to mow down the Hooks over the early innings, picking up six strikeouts through the first three frames. He struck out the first batter of the 4th as well before allowing his first baserunner of the evening on a one-out single, but the inning quickly ended on a double play.

He picked up the 5th inning right where he left off, racking up two more strikeouts in a perfect frame. Arizona's No. 7 prospect was extremely efficient in his start, facing the minimum 15 batters through five frames. The Hooks finally figured him out in the 6th inning, where they plated two runs to tie the game.

Corpus Christi led off the 6th with a single and a walk before Jarvis notched his 10th strikeout. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two outs, but an RBI triple to right-center field plated both runners.

Jarvis was then relieved by Josh Green, who picked up the last out to end the inning. The top prospect's outing ended at 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, and 10 K, tied for his most strikeouts in a game this year and his fifth consecutive start with three or fewer earned runs.

The Soddies offense picked up just two hits after Centeno's 2nd-inning homer until Tristin English led off the 6th with a double. Amarillo couldn't break the tie despite a runner in scoring position, as the next three batters went down in order.

Eduardo Diaz and Jorge Barrosa teamed up for a pair of highlight grabs in the outfield in the top of the 6th. Diaz recorded the first out of the frame with a sliding catch on the run to his right, and Barrosa made a running basket catch to his left to end the inning.

Jeff Bain took the mound in the 8th and swiftly set down the Hooks 1-2-3 with two strikeouts. Barrosa and English drew back-to-back one-out walks in the bottom of the frame to put the potential tying run in scoring position, but the inning ended on a flyout to the warning track.

The Hooks put a runner in scoring position after a hit-by-pitch and an error in the 9th, but Bain pitched a scoreless frame to send Amarillo to walk-off territory.

Juan Centeno led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, and he was pinch-run by Roby Enriquez as the potential winning run. Tim Tawa followed him with a single, and Ti'Quan Forbes advanced them both with a sacrifice bunt. The Hooks intentionally walked Andy Yerzy to load the bases with one out, but the next two batters were retired to bring the game to extras.

Bain was relieved by Justin Lewis in the 10th inning after throwing two scoreless innings. Lewis issued a leadoff walk, followed by a go-ahead three-run home run that put Corpus Christi on top. He walked the next batter as well, which was followed by another two-run homer that increased the Hooks' lead to 7-2.

The Hooks struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to secure their win. Amarillo was held hitless with runners in scoring position in the contest, going 0-for-10 with nine runners left on base.

Amarillo and Corpus Christi will face off in game three tomorrow, Thursday, July 28th with first pitch at 7:05 PM. RHP Slade Cecconi (5-3, 4.22 ERA) will face off against RHP Cody Deason (2-3, 8.14 ERA).
