Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Kannapolis, NC - In the final game of the four-game set between the top two teams in the South Atlantic League Northern division, the Shorebirds used a Zach Jarrett two-run walk-off homer in the ninth to defeat Kannapolis 4-3 Thursday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (14-7) got busy in the first inning off Kannapolis starter Kade McClure, as the Shorebirds used a pair of walks to T.J. Nichting and Seamus Curran, along with a Zach Jarrett single to create early trouble for McClure. After a mound visit from pitching coach Jose Bautista, Trevor Craport singled on a ground ball to right field, scoring Nichting from third and loading the bases again for Ryan Ripken. The son of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. grounded into a force out at second base, allowing Jarrett to score to put Delmarva up 2-0.
After recording seven of the first nine outs via strikeout, Matthias Dietz allowed the Intimidators lineup back into the game with a one-out walk to Justin Yurchak, bringing up the double machine, Craig Dedelow. The former Indiana Hoosier did what does best, roping a double to right field, scoring Yurchak and moving to third base on a fielding error by Will Robertson in right field. Down by one, Tate Blackman earned a walk to put runners at the corners for Evan Skoug, who lifted a ball deep enough into center to score Dedelow from third, tying the game, 2-2. Despite a two-out double off the bat of Carlos Perez, Johan Cruz flied out to center field to leave two runners on base for Kannapolis.
In the fifth, McClure allowed a one-out single to Jarrett to left field, followed by a Seamus Curran walk. After getting a pop out from Craport, left-handed pitcher Kevin Escorcia got the call out of the pen from manager Justin Jirschele, striking out Ripken to end the threat.
After three scoreless innings, the Intimidators took the lead in the eighth with a little bit of déjà vu, as Yurchak walked, followed by a Dedelow double down the right field line, his sixth of the season. So, with Blackman at the plate and Yurchak representing the lead-run 90 feet away, Alex Katz(W, 2-0) threw a wild pitch that went to the backstop, giving Kannapolis a 3-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jake Elliot (L, 0-1) replaced Yelmison Peralta on the bump for the Intimidators, as Nichting singled with one out up the middle to bring up Robertston. After three pickoff attempts to first and four pitches to the plate, Elliot struck out Robertson for the second out of the inning, bringing up Jarrett.
The left fielder for the Shorebirds smacked an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall, scoring Nichting and giving Delmarva the 4-3 win to end the series. The home run proved to be Jarrett's seventh of the season.
The Intimidators will stay up north as they travel to Lakewood to take on the BlueClaws for a three-game series starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
