CHARLOTTE, NC - The American Hockey League today announced that it has named Charlotte Checkers forward Janne Kuokkanen the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for February.

Kuokkanen earns the award after scoring 12 points (3g, 9a) in 13 games during the month, tying him for first among league rookies and for first among all Checkers skaters during that time. The 19-year-old native of Oulunsalo, Finland, recorded four multi-point games during the month, highlighted by a three-point (2g, 1a) outing in a win over Hartford on Feb. 13.

For the season, the Carolina Hurricanes' second-round draft choice in 2016 (43rd overall) ranks tied for sixth on the Checkers in scoring with 28 points (second among rookies) and ranks fourth on the team with 22 assists (first among rookies) in 41 games.

Kuokkanen began the season in the NHL with Carolina, playing his first four professional games in North America before joining the Checkers on Oct. 30. He also represented Finland at the IIHF World Junior Championship in December.

Kuokkanen becomes the second player in Checkers history to win the AHL's Rookie of the Month honor. Lucas Wallmark first captured the award in January of 2017.
