Maywood Laguneros News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 9, 2004) - Lenny Cooke and Nick Sheppard of the American Basketball Association (ABA) Long Beach Jam were involved in a single-car accident last night in Beverly Hills. Sheppard, the driver, was wearing his seatbelt and escaped with only minor cuts and bruises. Cooke was not wearing his seatbelt and suffered a broken left shin and femur.

Cooke was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where doctors performed successful surgery on his femur. He will undergo surgery on the shin in the next few days and eventually should be able to resume his basketball career.

"I am just happy that Lenny and Nick are alive," President Steve Chase said. "Since joining the Jam, both men have given their all for this team on and off the court. I wish Lenny a speedy recovery."

The Jam had a game against the Los Angeles Stars Wednesday at Taft High School in Woodland Hills. After a 112-110 victory, Cooke and Sheppard went to dinner. Sheppard lost control of his vehicle shortly after 1 a.m. in Beverly Hills and hit a light post. Police have determined that Sheppard was not drinking and that slick road conditions caused the accident.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
