Second Half Surge Lits Nighthawks past Fusion

December 9, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maryland NightHawks News Release

Upper Marlboro, MD. Timely 3-point shooting and strong inside play was the difference as the Maryland Nighthawks defeated the Philadelphia Fusion 114-109 at the Show Place Arena.

"Our surge at the end of the 3rd quarter was the key for us," explained Head Coach Twiggy Sanders. "That gave us some breathing room."

The Nighthawks put together 30 points in both the third and fourth periods with a balanced scoring attack, as for the second consecutive game the Nighthawks had six players in double figures. Kevin Robinson led the way with 26 points and 11 rebounds. When Philadelphia double-teamed him, it enabled guards Randy Gill (16 points) and jermaine Medley (14 points) to connect from the outside, as both made 4 three pointers. Jason Williams scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Johnny Rhodes chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

The Fusion were led by former Syracuse standout and current Maryland resident Lawrence Moten, who scored 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. He was not the only member of the Fusion with local ties, as head coach Jarrin Jackson was a standout for Georgetown University in the early-mid nineties. Guards Wayne Nelson and Mike Robinson added 18 and 10 points respectively for Philadelphia.

The victory puts the Nighthawks at 3-2 with their next home game against Georgia this Friday night at 7PM at Show Place Arena. After that, the Nighthawks face the Fusion again (Mon, Dec 13), Harlem (Sun, Dec 19) and New Jersey (Wed, Dec 22).
