Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Jamestown, NY- Kevin Sewell was 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI as the Jamestown Jammers pounded out 14 hits and the broke the game open with four unearned runs in the fourth inning in a 12-2 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Diethrick Park.

The Expos only runs of the night came in the third inning on a two-run homer from Ofilio Castro, his second homer of the season, to give Vermont a 2-1 lead. But that would be short-lived as the Jammers scored three runs in the bottom of the third off Expos starter Steven Cook, including a two-run single from Sewell for a 4-2 Jamestown lead.

The Jammers blew the game open in the fourth as they took advantage of three Vermont errors for the four unearned runs for an 8-2 Jamestown lead. Brandon Conway made a one-out fielding error and Jose Contreras made a two-out fielding error that allowed Jamestown's fifth run to score and keep the inning alive. The Jammers added RBI singles from JT Resko and Sewell in the inning for the six-run lead.

Jamestown added another run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh, the last two scoring on a Sewell two-run double for the 12-2 lead. Thomas Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth for the Expos, the first time all night that a Vermont pitcher retired the Jammers in order in an inning.

Four other Jammer hitters had two hits in the game to go along with Sewell's three-hit night, while Restko and Brian Cleveland both scored three runs. Jason Vargas (3-1) allowed two runs on two hits over five innings to pick up the win for Jamestown (13-25).

Cook (0-5) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over three innings to take the loss, while Jose Contreras was 2-for-3 with a run, walk and three stolen bases for Vermont (18-21). The Expos (18-21) are 3-6 in their last nine games since reaching the .500 mark and play game two of the three game series at Jamestown on Friday with Jon Felfolfi on the mound for Vermont.
