Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
The NY-Penn League's best team came to Ripken Stadium Thursday night and posted a 5-2 win over the IronBirds (20-20). The Auburn Doubledays (30-7), a Toronto Blue Jays affiliate, have won six straight and 9 of its last 10 contests.
Aberdeen took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Quincy Ascencion RBI single that scored Levi Robinson who scored after a leadoff double. A CJ Smith sac fly scored Ascencion to make it 2-0 Aberdeen. It would be the last lead of the night for the âBirds, who fall to .500 for the first time since the second game of the season (June 19th, 1-1).
Ascencion went 2-4, but Aberdeen was held to five hits. Rafael Diaz went 0-4 to end his nine-game batting streak. Carlos Mendez and CJ Smith added the other safeties for Aberdeen.
The Doubledays scored three in the 5th to take a 4-2 lead on RBI doubles by Eric Nielson and Vinnie Esposito and a sac fly. Auburn leads the league in both team batting (.287) and runs scored.
The losing pitcher was starter Bryce Chamberlin. This year's 6th round pick from Washington State gave up three runs, (two earned) over four innings. Ryan Childs, Trent Baysinger, Kevin Hart and Justin Azze followed. Hart, this year's 11th round pick out of Maryland, pitched a 1-2-3, seventh in his pro debut with two strikeouts.
Game 2 of the three game set will be Friday night at 7:05 at Ripken Stadium. Still just one game behind Hudson Valley for the Wild Card, Aberdeen will send Luis Ramirez to the mound looking for a victory.
