San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio - Earlier today, it was announced that Jamie Quirk was named the new manager at Triple-A El Paso.

Quirk replaces Pat Murphy, who on Tuesday, was named San Diego's interim manager for the rest of the season.

Quirk was in his first year at the helm in San Antonio, compiling a 28-35 record, which included Tuesday's 4-2 win over Corpus Christi.

He is in his second season in the Padres' organization and his 43rd in professional baseball. Last season, Quirk, 60, was the manager at High-A Lake Elsinore, where he guided the Storm to a 75-65 record and a playoff berth.

Replacing Quirk as Missions' skipper is another former big league catcher, Rod Barajas. Like Quirk, the Ontario, CA native is in his second season in the Padres' system and arrives from Lake Elsinore, where he was in his first full season as hitting coach. Barajas, 39, joined the Storm last June after beginning the season as manager of the Rookie-Level Arizona League Padres.

"We hate to see Jamie Quirk go, but it's a well deserved promotion," said Missions' President Burl Yarbrough. "I'm looking forward to working with Rod Barajas and think he'll be a great fit here in San Antonio. Rod had a terrific big league career and his experiences in the game will help our young players."

Barajas played in parts of 14 Major League seasons with Arizona (1999-2003), Texas (2004-06), Philadelphia (2007), Toronto (2008-09), New York-NL (2010), Los Angeles-NL (2010-11) and Pittsburgh (2012). In 1114 career games, Barajas hit .235 (812-for-3460) with 187 doubles, one triple, 136 homers, 480 RBI and 396 runs scored.

He was originally signed by the Diamondbacks as a minor league free agent in 1996. He made his debut with Arizona in 1999 and was a member of the Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series champion squad.

Barajas also has ties to the Texas League, spending the bulk of his 1999 season with the El Paso Diablos. That season Barajas hit .318 (162-for-510) with 14 homers and 95 RBI, earning Post-Season All-Star honors.

He and his wife, Stacie, reside in Rancho Santa Fe, CA with their eight children: Andrew, Bryce, Rod Jr., Jace, Aunalilia, Aubrielle, Starlette and Emiko.

Barajas will make his Missions debut Wednesday night when San Antonio resumes its eight-game homestand with the first of four against the Midland RockHounds. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.

Note: The last time San Antonio had a managerial change during a season was in 1998: Ron Roenicke (44-37) and Lance Parrish (23-36).
