San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio rode ace Justin Hancock to a 4-2 win over Corpus Christi in front of 4,367 Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.

Tuesday night's series finale featured a highly anticipated pitching showdown between Texas League All-Star right-handers Hancock and Corpus Christi's Chris Devenski.

Hancock quickly fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first courtesy of Tyler White's RBI single to left.

Fortunately, for Hancock, his offense picked him up in the bottom half against Devenski, who entered the start with a league-leading 0.65 ERA.   Duanel Jones provided all the offense in the frame, connecting on a clutch, two-out, two-run double to left center to put the Missions in front.

In the top of the fourth, Jio Mier tied the game at two with an RBI single to left.

Once again, San Antonio immediately answered, retaking the lead in the bottom half when Jose Rondon followed Jason Hagerty's one-out triple with a single up the middle. It was the first hit and RBI for Rondon, who was making his Double-A debut.

Yeison Asencio upped the Missions' lead to 4-2 when he belted Devenski's first pitch of the sixth inning onto the berm in left.

The insurance run was more than enough for Hancock, who scattered eight hits and two walks, while fanning five over a career-high, tying seven innings. Hancock (6-2) has allowed two runs or less in nine of his 13 starts this season.

Another All-Star bound righty, Tayron Guerrero, followed Hancock with two scoreless frames to notch his fifth save of the season.

Devenski (7-1) suffered his first loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings.

San Antonio (28-35) resumes its eight-game homestand with the first of four against Midland (32-32) Wednesday on Military Appreciation Night presented by Dr. Pepper. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (3-8, 4.22) gets the nod in the opener for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Chris Jensen (4-5, 5.35).

Notes: Rondon arrived from High-A Lake Elsinore, where in 57 games, he was batting .300 (71-for-237) with 12 doubles, three triples, three homers, 22 RBI, 50 runs scored and 17 steals. The 21-year-old departed the California League on a 10-game hit streak, during which he batted .409 (18-for-44).

Rondon, a Villa de Cura, Venezuela native, was originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a non-drafted free agent in January of 2011. San Diego acquired Rondon from the Angels as part of the Huston Street trade last July.
