San Angelo Colts News Release
HARLINGEN, Texas - For the fourth time in four games on this road trip, the San Angelo Colts scored before their opponent. They blew one lead in Alexandria but on Tuesday in Harlingen, the Colts (51-29) captured their third win of the trip, leading from the first inning on as they defeated the WhiteWings 5-2 in the opener of a three-game series.
San Angelo scored four runs over the first three innings, which was more than enough offense for starter Frank James (6-5), who picked up the win to go above .500 for the first time this year. Working on just three days' rest, James threw seven innings, allowing only two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He surrendered a two-out, two-run homer to Amadeo Zazueta in the third and allowed only one baserunner over the next 4 1/3 innings, and that was David Fowler, who reached on an error to begin the sixth. The left-hander retired 13 of 14 before exiting, and, overall, the Wings (20-61) managed only hit the rest of the game after Zazueta's home run.
Harlingen starter Brock Nehls (1-3) delivered a solid effort but gave up the early runs and lost for the second time in three starts versus the Colts. Nehls worked seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Tyrone Pendergrass led off the contest with a single, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error to third by Harlingen catcher Carl Johnson to make it 1-0. San Angelo doubled its lead with one out in the second when Aaron Cone scored from third on an error by second baseman Matt Lawman on a grounder by Wyn Diggs, who was credited with his 41st RBI.
The Colts doubled their lead again with two runs in the third to make it 4-0. With one out, John Anderson doubled and came home on a two-out single by Andres Rodriguez, who picked up his league-leading 98th RBI of the season. Cone followed with a single, as did Landreth, driving home Rodriguez and giving San Angelo a 4-0 advantage.
After Zazueta's fourth dinger of the year in the third made the score 4-2, the Colts added a run off Nehls in the sixth on an RBI triple by Anderson, his second run-scoring triple in as many games.
Hard-throwing right-hander Robert Romero pitched a scoreless eighth for the Colts and closer Luke Massetti hurled a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to record his fourth save. The Colts are now 13-3 against Harlingen this season, and with a win either Wednesday or Thursday, the Colts will win their fifth of five series against the WhiteWings this season.
The Colts continue this three-game series in Harlingen at 7:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday, August 13. San Angelo returns for the final home series of the regular season on Friday, August 15, with a Back-to-School Kit Giveaway, sponsored by 2-1-1Texas.
