Jam slay Dragons
January 29, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maywood Laguneros News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2005) â It was a festive night at the Long Beach Pyramid as the Long Beach Jam (11-9) of the American Basketball Association (ABA) beat the Tijuana Dragons, (6-12) 139-114, in front of a crowd of 2,428. Adding to the atmosphere, hundreds of local children from National Junior Basketball filled the stands and took the court for pre-game and halftime contests.
The Jam dominated the night with eight players scoring in double digits, 37 points off turnovers (Tijuana had seven) and a 54-37 rebounding edge. Damian Cantrell was Long Beach's leading scorer with 27 points and Juaquin Hawkins added 25 in the victory.
Tijuana's Adrian Brown led all scorers with 31 points and Dubrey Black chipped in 28 in the loss. Perhaps anticipating Dennis Rodman's trip to Tijuana Feb. 3, Reggie McCoy grabbed a worm-esque 22 rebounds for the Dragons.
The Jam never trailed after the first quarter and ended the first half on a high note, with Derrick Dial hitting Jack Hartman midair for a spectacular alley oop as time expired to take a 64-57 lead into the locker room.
Sean Chen started the game hot for the Jam, scoring nine points in the games first four minutes. Chen finished with 12 points.
The Jam ended a five-game home losing skid tonight. Their last home victory was a 114-107 victory over Portland Dec. 10.
The Jam hit the road for three games before returning home Sunday, Feb. 6 at noon to face the California Buzz Dragons at the Pyramid.
