
Jam Hold off Legends in Final Seconds

BAKERSFIELD "" The Bakersfield Jam (11-18) snapped a 7-game losing streak as they defeated the visiting Texas Legends (15-15) Friday night by a final score of 112-109.
After one quarter of play, Bakersfield held a 31-22 lead thanks to a well executed first 12 minutes as they shot 54 percent from the floor and held Texas to just 26 percent. The Jam were able to extend their lead to as many as 14 points in the second quarter, but Texas fought back to make it a six-point game at the break (54-48).
The Jam outscored the Legends 31-29 in the third quarter and held an 85-77 advantage heading into the final frame. Bakersfield struggled a bit in the fourth as they committed eight turnovers, compared to just one for Texas, and it allowed the Legends to go on a run to take a 109-104 lead with 1:09 remaining in the game. Trailing by just one point (109-108), James Nunnally converted a putback lay-up to give Bakersfield a 110-109 lead with 08.4 seconds left. In the following possession, Bakersfield's defense sealed the victory as Damion James executed a great defensive effort by blocking Devin Ebanks' potential game-winning shot.
Overall, Bakersfield shot better from the field (51.8%-40.4%) and held the advantage in rebounds (51-39), assists (29-23) and points in the paint (60-48). The Jam did, however, commit more turnovers than the Legends (28-15).
Bakersfield's two NBA assignees led the Jam as Jared Cunningham (Atlanta Hawks) posted 29 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds, while Archie Goodwin (Phoenix Suns) had 28 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Damion James tallied 16 points and Nunnally finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Devin Ebanks paced the Legends with a game-high 36 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds. PJ Hairston scored 29 points and Melvin Ely contributed 21 points.
Both teams go back at it tomorrow February 8 at 7:00 p.m. PST at the Dignity Health Event Center.
