Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - In spite of a surreal effort by Thunder goaltender Jake Moreland's 51 saves, the Long Beach Ice Dogs (21-15-5, 47 points) slid past the Stockton Thunder (7-22-6, 20 points) in a 2-1 shootout decision in front of a sellout crowd of 10,117 at Stockton Arena on Saturday night.
Long Beach's Chris Kenady scored the game winner on the last attempt of the shootout, with the puck deflecting between Moreland's legs.
Kenady opened the scoring by netting a power play goal off a rebound from the slot at 10:05 in the first.
Nathan Martz answered at 11:20 in the second for the Thunder on a nifty pass by Mike Lalonde from behind the net, with Joel Irwin also cashing an assist. The goal set off a barrage of stuffed animals onto the ice, as fans were invited to toss their Teddy Bears, donated to local children's charities.
The game remained tied through the third period and overtime, as both teams were unable to capitalize on their power play opportunities.
Moreland's 51 saves notched a new Thunder team record, as the Thunder picked up a point in the standings for the second straight game. Stockton held Long Beach to 1 for 11 on the power play, but was held scoreless in its 10 opportunities.
The Thunder and Ice Dogs return to play on Sunday with a 4 p.m. PT faceoff slated at Stockton Arena. The game can be heard live on the internet (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing at a $6 "pay-per-view" rate at www.stocktonthunder.com, courtesy of B-2 Networks.
