ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Ryan Gaucher enjoyed a five-point night as the Alaska Aces won their fifth straight, 6-1 over the Augusta Lynx in front of 4,422 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.
With the crowd anxiously awaiting another KeyBank Skate with the Aces, Kimbi Daniels, appearing in just the second game of his 16th pro season after undergoing surgery just prior to training camp, opened the scoring with a backhander in a five-on-three situation at 5:54 of the first period. Alaska failed to score on the subsequent power play, though, and Augusta answered with a power play goal of its own, as Brian Passmore made a quick steal in front of the Aces net and shoveled the loose puck past Alaska starter Matt Underhill with 6:39 left in the frame.
Gaucher broke the 1-1 tie just 2:42 into the second period by sneaking down the slot and firing a one-timer past Lynx goalie Jason Wolfe, assisted by Daniels. Justin Maiser pushed the margin to 3-1 at 15:36 with a tip-in on a power play, his third goal in as many games and fifth of the season.
Augusta still had a chance, trailing by only two goals with 10 minutes left in regulation, but could not stay out of the box. As a Lynx penalty expired, Mike Scott ripped a one-timer by Wolfe from the left circle at 11:56 and Joe Talbot scored Alaska's third power play goal of the night shortly thereafter to put the game out of reach. Like Scott, Talbot has 16 goals on the year, including 14 in his last 13 games. Gaucher set up Vladimir Novak on the rush for a shorthanded goal with 3:23 left to play to cap the scoring. At 32-6-3, Alaska enjoys a one-point lead in the West Division with a game in hand on Las Vegas, who plays at Idaho Monday.
The Aces have won five in a row, all at home, by a combined score of 31-7. Alaska opens a five-game, nine-day road trip Tuesday in Bakersfield at 6:00 p.m. AST before traveling to Long Beach for a 6:00 p.m. AST start Wednesday.
