Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Phoenix Roadrunners squared off for round two at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to settle the score from a shootout in game one.
The ice was still glistening from the previous night's high scoring affair-a 6-5 win for the Roadrunners-but tonight's matchup ended with a low score, in a 1-0 Overtime win for Phoenix.
B.J. Boxma got the nod in the net for the Salmon Kings and made eight saves in the first period. During a 5-3 man advantage for the Roadrunners, a scrum in the corner led to five penalties handed out-three to Phoenix and two to Victoria. Most of the first period was a battle of the special teams with a total of twelve penalties handed out and five powerplays.
In the second frame, Boxma faced and denied 11 Roadrunner shots. Despite some sparks from Victoria Forwards Mike Wirll, Adam Huxley, and Adam Taylor, the Salmon Kings were held scoreless in the second by Netminder Mike Mole.
Victoria Winger KC Timmons added life to the third period, batting at the puck from the side of the net and chasing rebounds into the corners. Victoria outshot Phoenix 11-9 in the third period, but Mole shut the door. The crowd of 4,659 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre roared with anticipation at every bouncing puck and breakaway opportunities from Taylor and Timmons. On the other side of the ice, in the final four minutes of the third, Boxma lunged at loose pucks and bounces off the boards.
It was in Overtime that the blessed bounce sealed the win for the Roadrunners. After killing off a Salmon King powerplay, the Roadrunners sailed into the Salmon King zone and Paul Ballantyne flipped the puck off to the left of the Victoria net. The puck took a strange bounce off the board, and landed on the stick of a pressuring Miguel Lafleche, who scored the winner with 17 seconds left in Overtime.
Mole recorded his tenth win and second shutout of the season, while Boxma is handed a second overtime loss. Victoria outshot Phoenix 10 to 1 in Overtime, and 32 to 29 overall.
The Salmon Kings faceoff against the Augusta Lynx of the American Conference on Wednesday February 1st at 7:00 p.m., to launch a three game series and the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
