MONTGOMERY EDGES JACKSONVILLE IN 10
The Montgomery Biscuits walked off on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 2-1 on Saturday from Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits started the scoring in the first inning on Kevin Padlo's sacrifice fly. In the fifth, J.C. Millan lifted a sacrifice fly of his own to equalize the score at 1-1. The tally remained that way until the 10th inning. Robbie Tenerowicz bunted Miles Mastrobuoni, who had started the inning at second base, to third. David Rodriguez then singled in Mastrobuoni to win the contest for Montgomery. Justin Twine collected three hits in the effort for the Jumbo Shrimp, matching a season-high. Josh Roeder and Alex Mateo combined for 4.1 scoreless innings of relief. Tommy Eveld yielded just an unearned run in 1.1 frames.
SMITH SET FOR SECOND REHAB START WITH SHRIMP
Miami Marlins left-hander Caleb Smith will make his second injury rehabilitation on Sunday when the Jumbo Shrimp begin a four-game set with the Chattanooga Lookouts. In his first rehab start, Smith surrendered a leadoff home run to Pensacola's Travis Blankenhorn on Monday before tying the Southern League record with eight consecutive strikeouts. He finished that outing with 11 punchouts in just 4.1 innings - 68.8 percent of the Blue Wahoos he faced and a rate of 22.9 per nine innings. Pensacola hitters swung through 29.6 percent of Smith's offerings in Monday's contest. A native of Huntsville, Texas, Smith has made 12 starts this season for Miami, going 3-4 with a 3.41 ERA and 4.21 FIP. Over 66.0 innings, the Sam Houston State product has yielded 47 hits (6.4 H/9) while striking out 82 (11.2 K/9) against 20 walks (2.7 BB/9). He was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 7 with left hip inflammation.
STARTER KIT
In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). Following that tough beginning though, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 60 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.90 ERA (111 ER in 345.0 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 98 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 301 (7.9 K/9) and yielded 281 hits (7.3 H/9).
CLOSE TALKERS
Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 16-29 (.356) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, 14 of Jacksonville's last 18 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won nine of these 14 contests.
'PEN PALS
An unearned run in the 10th inning on Sunday in Montgomery halted the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen's scoreless innings streak at 14. Having said that, the last time a Jacksonville reliever yielded an earned run was on June 25 - a span of 14.2 frames. Over the last 16 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 56.0 innings with just six runs, five earned, for a 0.80 ERA. During this 16-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 25 hits (4.0 H/9) while whiffing 54 (8.7 K/9) against 16 walks (2.6 BB/9).
BROADWAY JACKSONVILLE JOE
Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 18 games since then, the Miami native is for 20-for-62 at the plate, slashing a robust .323/.382/.500 with eight doubles, one home run, five RBIs and five walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 23.3 percent this year. However, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 45.3 percent.
