Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former Barons pitcher Dylan Cease will join the White Sox and make his MLB debut in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against Detroit, general manager Rick Hahn announced Sunday afternoon.

Cease, who spent the 2018 season in Birmingham, posted a stellar 1.72 ERA across 10 starts with the Barons and limited opponents to a .168 clip at the plate. The right-hander earned MLB Pipeline's Pitcher of the Year Award as he amassed a 12-2 mark and 2.40 ERA combined between Double-A Birmingham and Hi-A Winston-Salem.

Pipeline ranks Cease as the No. 3 prospect in the White Sox system and the No. 18 prospect in all of baseball.

Cease, whom the White Sox acquired from the Chicago Cubs along with outfielder Eloy Jimenez, first baseman Matt Rose and second baseman Bryant Flete in exchange for left-hander Jose Quintana on July 13, 2017, began the 2019 campaign at Triple-A Charlotte. The three-time Minor League All-Star compiled a 5-2 record with a 4.48 ERA through 15 starts with the Knights.

Cease, 23, paced Charlotte in a plethora of categories, including wins, ERA (among qualified pitchers), innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP (among qualifiers) at the time of his call-up.

Initially selected by the Cubs in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Milton High School (GA), Cease logged 2.2 innings of work for the White Sox during Spring Training.

First pitch in Cease's MLB debut is slated for 1:10 p.m. CT at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

The Barons, who are in the midst of a season-high four-game win streak, are set to hit the road for a four-game series against the Tennessee Smokies beginning Sunday afternoon. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT at Smokies Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
