July 30, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp host the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in Monday's 7:05 p.m. game from the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Jumbo Shrimp, Dreams Come True and Community First Credit Union are partnering for a historic Dreams Come True (literal) 2 For Tuesday presented by Community First Credit Union. The Jumbo Shrimp are welcoming a Jacksonville Dreamer and a parent to be the only two people in the ballpark. Fans can join the Jumbo Shrimp just beyond the Budweiser Tiki Terrace for a party celebrating a Southern League attendance record of... two people. At the conclusion of the fifth inning, all fans will be let into the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to help sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" in the seventh inning to celebrate the Dreamer in style. In addition, as fate would have it, on the Dreams Come True (literal) 2 For Tuesday presented by Community First Credit Union, the first two fans through the gates will receive an authentic Jumbo Shrimp jersey.

JACKSONVILLE WINS PITCHERS' DUEL

Sixto Sanchez fired six scoreless innings and Riley Mahan homered on Monday to lift the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to a 1-0 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos from the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Mahan's first-inning home run off Pensacola starter Bryan Sammons was the extent of the offense for the two clubs. Sanchez scattered a pair of hits and a walk in his six frames, recording five strikeouts to earn the win. Tommy Eveld worked two scoreless frames before ceding to Dylan Lee, who twirled a blank ninth for his 12th save of the season. The shutout was the Jumbo Shrimp's second blanking in the last six days.

A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE

Jacksonville has surrendered just 54 runs in their last 18 games (3.0 per game), and the club's starting pitching has been a huge culprit behind those run-prevention efforts. During this span, Jumbo Shrimp starters combined for a 2.87 ERA (31 ER in 97.1 IP). The quintet of starting pitchers have posted 100 strikeouts against 29 walks and 81 hits allowed in the process. In comparison, Jumbo Shrimp starters had compiled a 6.13 ERA (32 ER in 47.0 IP) over the previous nine games.

OF MICE AND 'PEN

From June 26 through the eighth inning on July 5, the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen netted a 36-inning streak without an earned run. That roll is in the midst of a stretch that has been devastating opposing lineups late in games. Over the last 43 contests, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 145.2 innings with just 32 runs, 27 earned, for a 1.67 ERA. During this 43-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively ceded just 86 hits (5.3 H/9) while whiffing 156 (9.6 K/9) against 45 walks (2.8 BB/9).

CONNECT FOUR

Buoyed by strong pitching throughout the season, the Jumbo Shrimp offense has been given a bigger margin of error by not needing to score huge quantities of runs to win games. In fact, Jacksonville has won each of its last 18 contests when hitting the four-run marker. On the season, when the Jumbo Shrimp tally at least four scores, the club is a sterling 38-6 (.864). Jacksonville, however, has plated three runs or fewer in eight straight contests.

GONE WITH THE WIND

Jacksonville bludgeoned five home runs from July 18-21 during their four-game series at Chattanooga, matching their most in any set this season. In the eight games since that point, the Jumbo Shrimp have cracked just three long balls, two of which have come from Riley Mahan. That, along with nine round-trippers surrendered in the same stretch, may explain why Jacksonville has gone just 3-5 since that four-game sweep of the Lookouts. On the season, the Jumbo Shrimp have compiled only 41 home runs as a team, the third-lowest such total out of the 120 teams in MiLB, and only two ahead of last-place St. Lucie (High-A, Mets).

CRAZY, STUPID, GLOVE.

Jacksonville has committed 23 errors in their last 26 games, pushing their season total to 81, a figure that ranks right in the middle of the pack in the Southern League. That said, errors are not necessarily the most effective way of judging a club's defense. An argument for the Jumbo Shrimp being a strong defensive club can be found easily in how often the club has turned batted balls into outs, otherwise known as defensive efficiency. Jacksonville's .722 defensive efficiency equals Biloxi's .722 mark for the best in the circuit.

PRETTY, PRETTY, PRETTY GOOD

Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 25-16 (.610) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 41 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered the fewest runs (129) and hits (276) at the Double-A level. The Jumbo Shrimp also place first in Double-A in both WHIP (1.08) and batting average against (.211), fifth in walks (112) and fifth in ERA (2.96) during this span.

HERD OF BRYSON

Jumbo Shrimp infielder Bryson Brigman was hitting just .226/.307/.281 when he was assigned to High-A Jupiter on June 20 from Jacksonville. After a 20-game cameo with the Hammerheads in which he slashed .253/.339/.335, Brigman has returned to the Jumbo Shrimp as an absolute force at the plate. The San Jose, Calif., native has gone 17-for-48 16 contests in his second stint with Jacksonville, batting .354/.475/.521 with six doubles, one triple, four RBIs, nine runs scored and 10 walks.
