BLUE WAHOOS BLANK JUMBO SHRIMP

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were shut out 5-0 on Sunday by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos from the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Pensacola scored in their first at-bats on Ben Rortvedt's RBI double. In the second, Royce Lewis laced a two-run double and Joe Cronin scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0. The score remained 4-0 until the ninth, when Alex Kirilloff added an RBI single. The Jumbo Shrimp bullpen yielded just one run in 7.1 innings; Vincenzo Aiello worked 1.1 scoreless frames, Josh Roeder ceded that one tally in 5.1 innings and Dylan Lee induced the final two defensive outs for Jacksonville. Anfernee Seymour went 3-for-3 in the effort.

A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE

Jacksonville has surrendered just 54 runs in their last 17 games, and the club's starting pitching has been a huge culprit behind those run-prevention efforts. During this span, Jumbo Shrimp starters combined for a 3.05 ERA (31 ER in 91.1 IP). The quintet of starting pitchers have posted 95 strikeouts against 28 walks and 73 hits allowed in the process. In comparison, Jumbo Shrimp starters compiled a 6.13 ERA (32 ER in 47.0 IP) over the previous nine games.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD

From June 26 through the eighth inning on July 5, the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen netted a 36-inning streak without an earned run. That roll is in the midst of a stretch that has been devastating opposing lineups late in games. Over the last 42 contests, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 142.2 innings with just 32 runs, 27 earned, for a 1.70 ERA. During this 42-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively ceded just 85 hits (5.4 H/9) while whiffing 153 (9.7 K/9) against 44 walks (2.8 BB/9).

CONNECT FOUR

Buoyed by strong pitching throughout the season, the Jumbo Shrimp offense has been given a bigger margin of error by not needing to score huge quantities of runs to win games. In fact, Jacksonville has won each of its last 18 contests when hitting the four-run marker. On the season, when the Jumbo Shrimp tally at least four scores, the club is a sterling 38-6 (.864). Jacksonville, however, has plated three runs or fewer in seven straight contests.

INCHING CLOSER TO HISTORY...

Jacksonville fell 5-0 to Pensacola on Sunday, the Jumbo Shrimp's 21st shutout loss of the season. That figure is the highest-such total in the Southern League since Jackson suffered 21 blankings in 2015, and also nearly double that of Mississippi, the next-closest squad in the circuit with 12 in 2019. Out of the 120 teams in full-season Minor League Baseball, the nearest club to Jacksonville is High-A Palm Beach (St. Louis Cardinals), which has endured 17 shutouts. The 2018 Jumbo Shrimp led the Southern League with 16 blankings, and this year's club is nearing the circuit record of 25 set by Asheville in 1970.

FOR THE GLOVE OF THE GAME

Jacksonville has committed 23 errors in their last 25 games, pushing their season total to 81, a figure that ranks right in the middle of the pack in the Southern League. That said, errors are not necessarily the most effective way of judging a club's defense. An argument for the Jumbo Shrimp being a strong defensive club can be found easily in how often the club has turned batted balls into outs, otherwise known as defensive efficiency. Jacksonville's .721 defensive efficiency trails only Biloxi's .722 mark in the circuit.

PRETTY, PRETTY, PRETTY GOOD

Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 24-16 (.600) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 38 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered the fewest hits (273) and second-fewest runs (129) in Double-A. The Jumbo Shrimp also place first in Double-A in both WHIP (1.09) and batting average against (.213), fifth in walks (110) and fifth in ERA (3.03) during this span.

HERD OF BRYSON

Jumbo Shrimp infielder Bryson Brigman was hitting just .226/.307/.281 when he was assigned to High-A Jupiter on June 20 from Jacksonville. After a 20-game cameo with the Hammerheads in which he slashed .253/.339/.335, Brigman has returned to the Jumbo Shrimp as an absolute force at the plate. The San Jose, Calif., native has gone 16-for-46 15 contests in his second stint with Jacksonville, batting .348/.464/.522 with six doubles, one triple, four RBIs, nine runs scored and nine walks.
