July 29, 2019 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs are proud to announce that Mobile BayBears infielder Jahmai Jones has been named the league's Player of the Week, and Montgomery Biscuits southpaw Josh Fleming has earned Pitcher of the Week honors. Both awards recognize these players' performances for games played during the week of July 22-28.
Jones, 21, receives his first Weekly Award after recording a hit in six straight games for Mobile, including four straight multi-hit efforts from July 25-28. Last week he led all qualified batters across the Southern League in batting average (.444), on-base percentage (.500), and hits (12). He also ranked among the league leaders in several other categories including total bases (14, 3rd), runs batted in (8, T-1st), slugging percentage (.519, 5th), and OPS (1.019).
Through 25 games this month the Roswell, Georgia native is hitting .280 (26-for-93) with 12 runs scored and another 13 driven in. A midseason promotion to the BayBears last year, Jones is batting .226 (125-for-554) across 147 total Southern League games. The Los Angeles Angels selected Jones in the second round of the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft out of the Wesleyan School in Norcross, Georgia. He is currently listed as their no. 7 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
Fleming, 23, is named Pitcher of the Week following a pair of complete games against the Tennessee Smokies and Birmingham Barons. In total, Fleming combined to go 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA (1 ER/18.0 IP) as Montgomery extended their winning streak to eight games. He was the only pitcher in major or minor league baseball to throw two complete games this past week.
Through 19 appearances this season for the Biscuits (16 starts) the Columbia, Illinois native is 10-4 with a 3.25 ERA (42 ER/116.1 IP) and 87 strikeouts. A Southern League midseason All-Star, Fleming currently leads the league with three complete games and ranks among the league leaders in numerous categories including ERA (3.25, 10th), wins (10, T-2nd), innings pitched (116.1, 2nd), WHIP (1.11, 5th), and winning percentage (.710, 3rd). The Tampa Bay Rays selected Fleming in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft out of Webster University in Webster Groves, Missouri.
