HOMERS BLAST BRAVES BY JACKSONVILLE

Ryan Casteel and C.J. Alexander each homered twice in Wednesday's series opener to help the Mississippi Braves bury the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 8-2. The M-Braves blitzed the Jumbo Shrimp early on. Casteel crunched a three-run shot in the first, and later in the frame, Alexander added a two-run bomb to make it 5-0. In the fourth inning, Riley Mahan notched an RBI double and Stone Garrett laced an RBI single to slice Jacksonville's deficit to 5-2. However, Casteel launched a long ball to lead off the fifth inning. Alexander went yard again in the seventh and William Contreras' RBI single made it 8-2 in the eighth.

TURNING POINT

Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 29-20 (.592) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 49 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered both the fewest hits (329) and second-fewest runs (151) among clubs at the Double-A level. The Jumbo Shrimp also place first in Double-A in batting average against (.210) and WHIP (1.09), fourth in ERA (2.91) and seventh in walks (138) during this span.

CRAZY, STUPID, GLOVE.

Jacksonville has committed 26 errors in their last 34 games, pushing their season total to 84, a figure that ranks right in the middle of the pack in the Southern League. That said, errors are not necessarily the most effective way of judging a club's defense. An argument for the Jumbo Shrimp being a strong defensive club can be found easily in how often the club has turned batted balls into outs, otherwise known as defensive efficiency. Jacksonville's .725 defensive efficiency is the best such mark in the Southern League.

CONNECT FOUR

Buoyed by strong pitching throughout the season, the Jumbo Shrimp offense has been given a bigger margin of error by not needing to score huge quantities of runs to win games. In fact, Jacksonville has won each of its last 21 contests when hitting the four-run marker. On the season, when the Jumbo Shrimp tally at least four scores, the club is a sterling 41-6 (.872). Jacksonville, however, has plated three runs or fewer in 13 of their last 16 contests.

IT'S NOT A TRASH COMPACTOR, IT'S A BAYLOR

After six appearances out of the bullpen, Jacksonville left-hander Daniel Castano joined the club's starting rotation on June 26. The former Baylor Bear struggled in his first three turns, going 1-1 with a 7.53 ERA (14.1 IP, 25 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 4 BB, 10 K). However, the Austin, Texas native has turned things around over his last four starts; Castano, who takes the ball on Thursday against Mississippi, is 3-0 during that stretch with a 1.75 ERA (25.2 IP, 17 H, 6 R, 5 ER, BB, 24 K).

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

Jacksonville enters play on Thursday trailing Biloxi by 2.0 games in the second half South Division race and Pensacola by 7.0 games in the wild card standings. The Jumbo Shrimp have 25 games remaining to make up that ground, and fortunately for the club, just five come against a team with a winning overall record (Jackson, August 29-September 2). Having said that, in addition to Jackson, Birmingham and Mississippi each have posted winning records in the second half of the season, meaning, of Jacksonville's last 25 contests, 15 are against clubs with a positive second-half record.

A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE

Jacksonville has surrendered just 76 runs in their last 26 games (2.9 per game), and the club's starting pitching has been a huge culprit behind those run-prevention efforts. During this span, Jumbo Shrimp starters have combined for a 2.74 ERA (42 ER in 138.0 IP). The club's starting pitchers have posted 134 strikeouts (8.7 K/9) against 44 walks (2.9 BB/9) and 115 hits allowed (7.5 H/9) in the process. In comparison, Jumbo Shrimp starters had compiled a 6.13 ERA (32 ER in 47.0 IP) over the previous nine games.

X-'PEN

From June 26 through the eighth inning on July 5, the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen netted a 36-inning streak without an earned run. That roll is in the midst of a stretch that has been devastating opposing lineups late in games. Over the last 51 contests, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 175.0 innings with just 42 runs against, 37 earned, for a 1.90 ERA. During this 51-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively ceded just 105 hits (5.4 H/9) while whiffing 189 (9.7 K/9) against 56 walks (2.9 BB/9).
