SHRIMP SPLIT DE FACTO TWIN BILL ON SUNDAY
The Jumbo Shrimp split Sunday's quasi-doubleheader with Jackson, winning the completion of Saturday's suspended game 2-1 before dropping the finale 2-0. In game one, Brian Miller's RBI single knotted the score at one in the third inning. One frame later, Stone Garrett doubled in a run to give Jacksonville a 2-1 advantage. Kolton Mahoney tossed 5.1 hitless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. Andy Young led off the finale with a home run and Jackson tacked on another tally in the third on Jamie Westbook's RBI
double to make it 2-0. Jordan Yamamoto whiffed nine against those two blemishes in five innings.
'PEN PALS
Jacksonville's bullpen combined to toss 10.1 shutout frames throughout Sunday's quasi-twin bill, stretching their consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18. Jumbo Shrimp relievers have been responsible for 59.5 percent of the club's inning thus far, but the heavy workload in the early portion of the season has not affected the club's results. Jacksonville relief pitchers have surrendered just one run on five hits (2.0 H/9) for a 0.40 ERA. They have combined to strike out 21 batters against five walks.
SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE
Jacksonville went just 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position over Sunday's de facto doubleheader, stranding a total of 17 men. Through four games on the season, the Jumbo Shrimp are just 3-for-42 (.071/.167/.071) with ducks on the pond. The good news is that, throughout every single level in the history of baseball, situational hitting numbers
normalize with bigger sample sizes as the season goes on. For example, the 2018 Shrimp hit .224/.317/.350 (.667 OPS) with runners in scoring position, almost exactly akin to their overall batting line of .235/.312/.361 (.673 OPS).
DUST IN THE WIND
Through four games this season, Jacksonville hurlers have combined to strike out 44 batters, the most in the Southern League and tied for the fourth-highest total in Double-A. The Jumbo Shrimp are boasting a strikeout rate of 10.7 punchouts per nine innings, with the club striking out 30.3 percent of all opponents to come to the plate. Jacksonville starters have whiffed 23 in 14.2 innings (14.1 K/9).
ZERO DARK THIRTY
Through just four games, Jacksonville has already suffered a pair of shutout defeats, continuing an unpleasant trend from the 2018 season. The Jumbo Shrimp had the Southern League's worst record in shutouts in 2018, finishing just 4-16 (.200). The club's 16 blankings were the most in the circuit since Jackson suffered 21 shutouts in 2015 and represent Jacksonville's second-most during the club's Marlins era, which dates back through the start of the 2019 season (20, 2013). The Jumbo Shrimp are hitting just .171/.254/.203 as a team through the campaign's first four games, mustering only four runs in total.
APRIL SHOWERS
Jacksonville has not had a winning record in the month of April since the 2013 season, when the club went 14-10 en route to a 73-63 (.547) campaign. Over the last five Aprils, Jacksonville is 54-63 (.462) in the schedule's opening month. In comparison, from the beginning of the Marlins era on the First Coast, which dates to the start of the 2009 season, through 2013, Jacksonville suffered through just one losing month of April. Over those five years, they were 65-50 (.561) in the campaign's lid-lifting month.
WORLD'S BEST BOSS
Kevin Randel will manage the Jumbo Shrimp during the 2019 season, marking his third different stint in Jacksonville. The Marlins' 13th-round pick in 2002, Randel played seven seasons in the club's minor league system, batting .253/.371/.426 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs in 123 games in 2009 with Jacksonville. He later returned to the First Coast to serve as Jacksonville's hitting coach from 2012-14. The 2019 season is Randel's fifth as a skipper in Miami's organization, with the Wilmington, N.C. native having served as the pilot of then-Low-A Greensboro in 2015-16 and High-A Jupiter throughout 2017-18. Randel is 255-297 (.462) so far in his managerial career.
SHRIMP SCOPES
Monday represents a rubber match for Jacksonville and Jackson. The Jumbo Shrimp have not won a season-opening series since taking four of five from Birmingham in 2016... Corey Bird stole a pair of bases Sunday in his first day at the Double-A level.
