Jackson Drops Finale at Biloxi, 6-2
August 1, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release
Biloxi, Miss. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, could never really get their engines going in a 6-2 defeat against Biloxi on Wednesday at MGM Park. The homestanding Shuckers (65-44) kept Jackson (60-47) off the board entirely over the game's first eight innings, taking the victory despite the Generals outhitting the Shuckers by a 9-8 count.
After a scoreless first inning, Biloxi landed an early shot on Jackson's Bo Takahashi (7-5, 3.78 ERA) with a two-run, second-inning homer from Cooper Hummel to get the lead. The dinger was one of just three hits that Takahashi allowed in his six innings of work, eventually exiting with a pair of walks allowed and six punchouts. Justin Donatella conceded a seventh-inning leadoff homer to Dillon Thomas, followed by a two-out, two-run double to Skyler Ewing that deepened the moat in Biloxi's favor, 5-0. Jake Gatewood came away with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to make the lead 6-0 before the Generals finally got moving in the ninth.
The Generals put multiple men on base in the third, fifth, and sixth innings before coming up empty in each instance. Jeffrey Baez finally clubbed a two-run shot in the ninth to break up the shutout, homering in the same park where he won the 2019 Southern League Home Run Derby. Baez, Ramon Hernandez, and Galli Cribbs Jr. all came away with multiple hits, with Baez tallying a pair of RBI. Defensively, catcher Renae Martinez had an impressive game, starting one double play while also throwing out all three baserunners who tried to steal against him.
