Coverage begins at 7:20 p.m. ET on MiLB.tv, TuneIn, the MiLB First Pitch app and JaxShrimp.com.
FOUR-RUN THIRD PUSHES JACKSONVILLE TO WIN
A four-run third inning on Wednesday propelled the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to a 4-1 triumph over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Pensacola scored in their first at-bats on an error. In the third, a Blue Wahoos miscue plated Santiago Chavez. Lewin Diaz added a sacrifice fly before Riley Mahan banged an RBI double. Joe Dunand capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single, widening the Jumbo Shrimp lead to 4-1. In the eighth, Ryan Jeffers clubbed a two-run home run to draw the Blue Wahoos to within 4-3, but Dylan Lee picked up his 13th save with a scoreless ninth. Edward Cabrera ceded just one unearned run in 6.2 frames.
THROUGH THE GOOD TIMES AND THE BAD
Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 26-17 (.605) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 43 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered the fewest runs (133) and hits (287) at the Double-A level. The Jumbo Shrimp also place first in Double-A in both WHIP (1.08) and batting average against (.209), fifth in ERA (2.98) and sixth in walks (119) during this span.
CRAZY, STUPID, GLOVE.
Jacksonville has committed 24 errors in their last 28 games, pushing their season total to 82, a figure that ranks right in the middle of the pack in the Southern League. That said, errors are not necessarily the most effective way of judging a club's defense. An argument for the Jumbo Shrimp being a strong defensive club can be found easily in how often the club has turned batted balls into outs, otherwise known as defensive efficiency. Jacksonville's .723 defensive efficiency is the best such mark in the Southern League.
CONNECT FOUR
Buoyed by strong pitching throughout the season, the Jumbo Shrimp offense has been given a bigger margin of error by not needing to score huge quantities of runs to win games. In fact, Jacksonville has won each of its last 19 contests when hitting the four-run marker. On the season, when the Jumbo Shrimp tally at least four scores, the club is a sterling 39-6 (.867). Jacksonville, however, has plated three runs or fewer in nine of their last 10 contests.
THE CHICKS DON'T DIG THIS
Jacksonville bludgeoned five home runs from July 18-21 during their four-game series at Chattanooga, matching their most in any set in 2019. In the 10 games since that point, the Jumbo Shrimp have cracked just three long balls, two of which have come from Riley Mahan. That, along with 11 dingers surrendered in the same stretch, may explain why Jacksonville has gone just 4-6 since that four-game sweep of the Lookouts. On the season, the Jumbo Shrimp have compiled only 41 home runs as a team, tied for the second-lowest such total out of the 120 teams in Minor League Baseball. Interestingly, Lewin Diaz and Jazz Chisholm, the two most recent trade acquisitions assigned to Jacksonville, have combined to belt 37 round-trippers in 2019.
A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE
Jacksonville has surrendered just 58 runs in their last 20 games (2.9 per game), and the club's starting pitching has been a huge culprit behind those run-prevention efforts. During this span, Jumbo Shrimp starters combined for a 2.62 ERA (32 ER in 110.0 IP). The club's starting pitchers have posted 110 strikeouts against 34 walks and 90 hits allowed in the process. In comparison, Jumbo Shrimp starters had compiled a 6.13 ERA (32 ER in 47.0 IP) over the previous nine games.
OF MICE AND 'PEN
From June 26 through the eighth inning on July 5, the Jumbo Shrimp bullpen netted a 36-inning streak without an earned run. That roll is in the midst of a stretch that has been devastating opposing lineups late in games. Over the last 45 contests, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 151.0 innings with just 34 runs, 29 earned, for a 1.73 ERA. During this 45-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively ceded just 88 hits (5.2 H/9) while whiffing 165 (9.8 K/9) against 47 walks (2.8 BB/9).
SHRIMP SKEWERS
Jacksonville went 15-13 (.536), the club's first winning month of July since 2016 and its best July dating back to 2014, when they went 20-10 (.667)... Since Biloxi's MGM Park opened in 2015, the Jumbo Shrimp are a meager 17-33 (.340) when playing at the Shuckers.
