Birmingham Barons News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Despite a 17-hit effort, the Birmingham Barons (22-16, 49-58) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (20-20, 58-52) by an 11-8 final in a back-and-forth series opener Thursday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Damek Tomscha recorded a three-hit night to lead the offensive charge for the Barons, who opened up a 5-0 lead in the second inning before Pensacola responded with four runs apiece in the third and fourth frames.
Tomscha, who joined the Barons June 28 via free agency, singled home a run in the second, singled once more in the fifth and delivered a game-tying base knock in the eighth. The former Auburn standout collected his fifth multi-hit game of the season and boosted his batting average to .447 across his past 10 games.
Seven players in Birmingham's lineup recorded a multi-hit effort, including Tomscha, Luis Basabe, Ti'Quan Forbes, Luis Gonzalez, Nate Nolan, Laz Rivera and Zach Remillard (Double-A debut). All nine players in the lineup tallied at least one hit.
The 17-hit display, which marked the Barons' second-most in a single game this season, wasn't enough, however, as the Blue Wahoos capitalized upon its opportunities to erase the five-run deficit. Pensacola scored eight unanswered runs before Joel Booker's RBI-double in the sixth brought Birmingham back within a pair.
Barons starter Lincoln Henzman surrendered seven runs (all earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work and did not factor into the decision.
Luis Basabe cut the deficit to one run with a run-scoring double in the eighth and Tomscha later followed with an RBI-single to center to tie the game.
Blue Wahoos third baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr. broke the late tie with an inside-the-park home run inches out of the reach of Barons center fielder Luis Gonzalez in the eighth inning. De Jesus Jr. raced around the bases and slid in just in front of the tag of catcher Nate Nolan.
Barons right-hander Vince Arobio (L, 2-1) suffered the loss out of the bullpen, while Blue Wahoos southpaw Andrew Vasquez (W, 1-0) collected the win.
Pensacola's Jonathan Cheshire locked down his first save at the Double-A level and set the Barons down in order in the ninth.
The Barons and Blue Wahoos will continue their five-game series Friday night as Birmingham sends left-hander Matt Tomshaw (4-5, 2.22) to the mound against Pensacola right-hander Jhoan Duran (1-0, 0.00).
First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. CT at Blue Wahoos Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
