Jacks Earn Governor's Cup with 4-3 Shootout Win

(Laredo, TX) - Sebastien Thinel's round-five goal gave the Odessa Jackalopes a 4-3, shootout win over the Laredo Bucks on St. Patrick's Day at Laredo Energy Arena in front of a crowd 5,064. The win earns Odessa the Governor's Cup Trophy for the best regular season record, and home-ice advantage throughout the CHL's Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs.

Dominic Leveille received credit for the game-winning goal after scoring in the shootout's first round for Odessa. Joel Martin turned aside all four Laredo shooters to improve to 9-2 this season in shootouts.

After trailing, 3-2, entering the third period Brian Swiniarski scored his second goal of the game just over two minutes into the frame to knot the game back up and force overtime. In a crowd in front of the net, the puck was deflected into the air and arched over Pier-Olivier Pelletier into the net for the tying goal.

Odessa started the game's scoring on a wrist shot from Phil Plante at the top of the left circle at 4:02 of the first period. Laredo answered back with a pair of goals. Sylvain Deschatelets (day-SHAT-uh-lay) scored on the power play at 7:37 and Igor Agarunov at 18:45.

Both teams traded second period goals. Swiniarski scored on a loose puck in front of the net at 9:31 to make it 2-2. Todd Griffith regained the lead for Laredo after drifting with the puck across the zone then lifting a wrist shot past Martin at 12:43

Mike Ramsay had an assist on each of Swiniarski's goals - his second two-goal game this season against Laredo.

Odessa's record now stands at 46-11-4. Two wins shy of setting a new franchise record. Tonight was their ninth win when trailing after two periods this year.

Martin stopped 27 of 30 shots to earn his 26th win of the season. He's has been in net for each of Odessa's shootout wins this year.

The Jackalopes and Bucks finish their home-and-home series on Friday at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa. Game time is set for 7:05 PM. The action can be heard on Classic Rock 102.1 FM
