Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks fell to the Allen Americans, 5-2, Wednesday night at Allen Event Center. Nino Musitelli registered a four-point game for Allen on two goals and two assists, and goaltender Chris Whitley stopped 19 of 21 shots in the win. Nick Sirota and Jeff MacDermid each had a goal for Missouri who fell to 31-26-6 with just one more game remaining in the regular season.
Allen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on Musitelli's two goals. He scored an unassisted goal at the 12:50 mark to give the Americans a lead they would not relinquish. At 17:14, Musitelli netted the Americans' lone power play goal on an assist from Ryan Fairbarn to give the home team a two-goal lead.
Missouri bounced back in the second period on Sirota's 19th goal of the season. The CHL All-Rookie scored at the 4:52 mark on assists from Simon Watson and Jordan Foreman to cut the Americans' lead in half. Missouri outshot Allen 8-5 in the period but still trailed by one goal heading into the final frame.
Bruce Graham gave the American's another two-goal lead when he skated into the Missouri zone, got past the defense and wristed a shot past Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa. Allen extended their lead to 4-1 on a nice individual effort by Colton Yellow Horn. He skated around a defender, got Festa to go down, and made a nice move to get past the Mavs' goaltender. MacDermid scored his 24th goal of the season for Missouri when he tipped a shot by Mike Burgoyne that went under the armor of Whitley. The power play goal for MacDermid also marked his team-leading 14th power play goal of the season. Finally, at the 15:51 mark of the third period, Tobias Whelan banged home a rebound and finalized the score at 5-2.
The Mavericks remain in the fifth spot in the Northern Conference and trail the Mississippi RiverKings by one point with one game remaining. Missouri will face Mississippi in the opening round of the playoffs; however home-ice advantage has not been determined.
