Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs dropped the first of three straight against the Colorado Eagles to close out the 2009-10 regular season, 4-2, Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
Steve Haddon led the way for the Eagles assisting on three of four Colorado goals while Joey Sides and Konrad Reeder each collected an unassisted marker in the loss.
The visiting Eagles were credited with the game's first tally 38 seconds into the middle frame on an uncertain play in the low slot after a scoreless first period in which each goaltender turned aside quality scoring chances.
Through a scramble at the top of the crease, Jim Jackson seemingly celebrated his 14th goal of the season at the far post as play continued between the circles. Referee Travis Smith whistled play and conversed with his linesmen before ultimately awarding the goal.
Linus Fagemo nearly evened the score at one with just over seven minutes to play in the second, beating a Colorado defender at the near circle and cutting across the top of the crease but Andrew Penner denied the chance with back-to-back leg pad saves.
Sides netted his 17th of the season on a strong individual effort at the 13:51 mark, tying the game at one.
The rookie forward won an offensive zone faceoff to himself before beating a Colorado player to the slot and sending a wrist shot past Penner for an unassisted tally.
Colorado responded to reclaim a one-goal lead 1:07 later as Haddon collected his first of three helpers in the contest, circling behind the Arizona goal and locating Adam Hogg alone in the slot.
Ed McGrane opened a two-goal lead for Colorado early into the third period, bouncing a puck five-hole past Doug Groenestege just 14 seconds in.
Reeder pulled his club back to within one on a shorthanded breakaway at the 4:03 mark, dragging a backhand through the slot before slipping a forehand effort under a sprawling Penner.
Lutes and Haddon converted a late 2-on-1 chance with 25 seconds remaining in the contest as the two caught Groenestege out of position as the netminder looked to exit the ice in exchange for an extra attacker.
Colorado tallied the game's first nine shots before Arizona countered with an 8-3 advantage in the second half of the first period.
Each team finished 0-for-7 with the man-advantage. Groenestege finished with 32 saves on 36 shots while Penner answered with 26 saves on 28 shots.
The two clubs skate in the second of their three-game set Friday at 7:05pm at Tim's Toyota Center. Tickets start at just $14 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
