JackHammers Survive Late Rally; Beat \'Cats 8-6

GARY, IN - The Joliet JackHammers (19-18) scored two very important insurance runs in the ninth to hold off the Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-19) 8-6 Tuesday night at U. S. Steel Yard. Joliet captured the series victory, their first over Gary since August of 2007, and will look for the sweep tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.

The JackHammers took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth after plating two runs off Andy Shipman in the top half. John Parham reached on a Brad Correll throwing error and the RailCats followed with four consecutive hits after a Zach Rodeghero strikeout. Adam Klein and Brad Furnish singled against Kyle Dahman and Mike Massaro bounced the reliever with another single. Griffin Bailey came on in an 8-4 game and allowed a Mike Reese single to score another run. After Jeff Beachum flew out in foul ground to make it 8-6, Louis Ott grounded out to end the rally.

Joliet jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the second and fourth innings against Tom Thornton (1-2). Josh Flores collected an RBI single in his first at-bat for Joliet and Jonathan Wyatt plated another for a 3-0 advantage.

Brad Correll and Jon Nelson played long ball in the fourth. Correll launched a two run bomb to left field and Nelson made it back-to-back shots with a solo home run on the very next pitch. All three runs were unearned after Joe Billick reached on a error to start the inning.

Devin Anderson (2-1) picked up his second win allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. The lefty struck out a season high six batters while walking only two.

Gary cut into the 6-0 lead with three in the fourth. Beachum and Ott led off with singles and Mike Rohde doubled home the first runs. Parham and Rodeghero each knocked in a run with groundouts to Freddie Thon to make it 6-3.

The JackHammers took advantage of three Gary errors, scoring five unearned runs against Thornton. The Gary starter went 6.1 innings, surrendering 11 hits and six runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and five walks.

Thon collected a JackHammer high three hits while Wyatt, Flores and Nelson each had two hits. Bailey picked up his third save in as many opportunities, recording the final two outs.

Joliet will look for the three game sweep tomorrow night with Rory Shortell (1-3) taking the bump against Brad Halsey (1-2). First pitch in Gary is set for 7:00 p.m. with a 6:50 pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
