Joliet JackHammers News Release
Bear Bay pitched seven scoreless innings and Jon Nelson drove in three runs to lead the Joliet JackHammers (18-18) past the Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-18) 7-3 Monday night at U. S. Steel Yard.
Joliet started the game with two runs in the first off Zeb Engle (3-1), who was making his first start of the season. Kevin Rios singled and stole second base, scoring on a Jon Nelson single for the 1-0 lead. Freddie Thon followed with a single and moved Nelson up to third. Thon got in a run down with Chris Colton up, allowing Nelson to steal home for the 2-0 advantage.
The JackHammers added single tallies in the four of the next six innings. Nelson collected RBI singles in the third and fifth frames while Ryan Wehrle made his JackHammer debut memorable, plating Colton from first with a double to centerfield. Colton made it 6-0 in the seventh with a fielder's choice and his fourth run batted in.
That was plenty for Bay (3-2), who went seven scoreless innings allowing only four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Bay did leave the game in the top of the eighth without throwing a pitch, leaving for precautionary reasons.
The RailCats scored three late runs against the JackHammer bullpen. Mike Reese's two run single in the eighth off Brian Gartley made it 6-2. Gary added one more in the ninth off a John Parham double play, scoring Louis Ott from third for the 7-3 final.
Engle was charged with the loss in the spot start surrendering three runs on five hits in four innings.
Nelson was 3-5 with three RBI singles while Rios and Thon each collected hits. Thon drove in his 33rd run of the season with a double in the ninth inning.
The JackHammers and RailCats continue their three game set tomorrow night in Gary. Devin Anderson (1-1) and Tom Thornton (1-1) is the pitching matchup. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. with a 5:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
