Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets scored 18 unanswered runs - their largest total number of runs this season - in an 18-1 blowout win over the West Virginia Power on Thursday night. The 17-run victory - Augusta's largest margin of victory this season - is the GreenJackets' third straight win.
Despite losing by such a large margin, the Power actually took the first lead on a Jose Hernandez sacrifice fly in the first inning. Augusta scored eight times in the second and never looked back, sending 13 men to the plate in their second-largest inning of the season. Skyler Stromsmoe and Ryan Cavan doubled home two each while Nick Liles doubled home another.
The inning's big blow came on Tommy Joseph's three-run home run as all eight runs in the frame scored with two outs. All told, the first 12 GreenJackets runs in the game and 14 of the 18 runs in the contest scored with two outs in their respective innings. 18 of Augusta's 22 runs in the first two games of the series have scored with two outs.
Augusta sent ten more to the plate in the fifth and scored four more times on a pair of two-run singles from Cavan and Ryan Lollis. Ten more Jackets came to the plate in Augusta's six-run seventh, with Stromsmoe and Chris Dominguez doubling home two apiece and Liles and Lollis providing run-scoring singles. Liles and Lollis had four hits each while Cavan and Luke Anders provided three hits each to pace a 21-hit Augusta attack, two shy of a season-high.
Brian Irving (7-5) benefited from Augusta's largest number of runs in over six years, picking up his first win in over a month. Irving fired 6.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Brett Lorin (1-3) suffered through the eight-run Augusta second, allowing eight runs - three earned - in 1.2 innings on seven hits.
The GreenJackets will send Chris Heston (5-12, 3.84) to the mound in an attempt to clinch a winning homestand on Friday night to face Phillip Irwin (5-3, 3.69) in the GreenJackets penultimate home game. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
